Staying at the Cliffs Club Resort on Kauai and without warning, the whole resort loses electrical power on March 28 around 5:30 pm. Called the front rest and they said not to worry as the power would be back on momentarily. As we had dinner plans in Kileua, we drove ther to find that that section of the island was also down without electrical so we headed for home stopping by Foodland to see what we could scrounge up for a meal. Foodland also without electrical and was full of people who had the same idea as us.

Anyone else on Kauai on March 28 having a similar story? Anyone know what the cause was? Power finally came on again at 9:45 pm. Glad we had our IPad along to play a few games in the dark, and boy it does get dark in a hurry. Cliff Club did have candles for all the units which helped in a small way. It was a night that we will remember.

It was a component failure on the grid that took out the whole island.

I wonder if...

It was a component failure on the grid that took out the whole island.

Since Marriott's KBC has their own generators, I wonder if they had an outage also?

Kona Storm

We were staying at Alii Kai years ago during a Kona Storm when the whole island lost power.

That place was darker than my mother in law's heart.

No candles, no matches, no emergency light...had to walk around in the pitch black unit stubbing my toes a couple times. then search for the mini flashlight in my luggage...finally found the penlight...still remember how incredibly bright it seemed. :D

Almost as soon as I found it the sheet lightning started and lighted the whole sky, no bolts of lightning just a flash that illuminated the whole outside.

What a storm. 60 mph winds too.

After that experience there is always a flashlite on the nite stand and coffee table.

Couple years ago, a single lightning strike took out all of Oahu. The grids are very old and very near capacity.

I always travel with a couple of mini flashlights, one in the suit case and one in the computer bag. Also, my cell phone is an EVO and it has a three stage flashlight that would put a lot of regular flashlights to shame!

Is this really any different than most of our older urban areas on the mainland?
