We'll be checking in at the Village Green on Jan 29, 2012 on a last-minute exchange. What can we expect regarding the Village Green? TUG reviews aren't current, nor very positive, so we don't have high expectations. We'll post a review after we return.

We are rank novices at cross country skiing and will be taking our skis in hopes of using them. Where do we find useful information regarding beginner/refresher lessons, access to trails, etc. in the Stowe area?

Any advice as to maximizing our fun while there would be appreciated. Good food stops? We were in Stowe for a few hours several years ago during fall leaf season but don't remember much about the area. We've never been there during winter

Trapp Family Lodge is reporting good snow and the "teaching tracks" look good in the picture at the website. You may want to go there for lessons and for some X-country skiing. Note: You pay a premium price at Trapp.

There are some X-country trails, that may be free of charge, along the roadways. There is parking, and the trails start, just like a hiking trail. The front desk at Village Green should be able to give you tips. Also, the Visitor Center in downtown Stowe is great.

We always stay at Trapp so the skiing is free (also free for exchangers in). I don't know that you need more than one lesson. Trapp has group lessons for beginners. I will say that many of the trails at Trapp are not really for novices, though, at least if you want to ski to the cabin which is a real highlight.

It's been a few years, but as I recall there is a municipal golf course with trails adjacent to Village Green.

We always go to Smuggs in the summer, but Stowe has a lot of restaurants - our favorite being "The Whip" at the Green Mountain Inn. Also, there is Frida's (Mexican) and the Cactus Cafe on Mountain Road. There if Piecasso and Pie in the Sky for pizza. Gracies, etc. In Waterbury, there is Hen of the Woods and Michaels restaurants-more upscale. If there was more snow on the ground, I would recommend snowshoeing. The bike path whips right around the Village Green - we always bike the whole thing in the summers-if there is snow on it I believe people ski on it. There's a small movie theater that serves alcohol drinks if you so desire! Nice shopping, and of course, Ben and Jerry's in nearby Waterbury. You can pick up some Stowe guides anywhere - gas stations/supermarkets and they are filled with information on activities, shopping and dining. Enjoy!:hi:
