I had to give my week @ Vacation Village, MA since my friend asked me if she could use it for family members. Soooo.... since I hate staying home for Christmas and I have been to the Smokey Mountains in the summer I am thinking of doing it for Christmas

...So for those that have done the Smokey Mountains for Christmas I have some questions?

- Is there someplace to ski?
- What is there to do there?
- Is Dollywood open?
- How is the weather that time of year?
- How are the roads that time of year?

Typically Ober Gatlinburg is at least making snow by then. Not a lot of natural snow.

There are a lot of special shows for the holiday season. Dollywood is terrific and is staying open later this year. Can't recall the exact closing date, but maybe January 3. They have always closed before at the end of December. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have lots of light sculptures that are fun to look at.

The weather could be anything from cold to balmy. Most likely pretty pleasant.

It is rare to get any snow at lower elevations. The road over the mountain to North Carolina might be closed if a mountain snow comes along. I think it snowed in the valley twice last year. Maybe three times.

I don't have any advice to offer, but I think it's a great idea. I've been thinking about going somewhere "out of the ordinary" myself. Thanks for the idea:)

We go to gatlinburg every year the week after Christmas thru New Years. We love it. Last year was the first time in about 8 years we have seen snow, other than a flake or 2. It snowed New Years morning (1 am). It was pretty and did not stick on the roads. We have often had temps in the 60s during that week. Usually great weather, only cold a time or 2. It is a very crowed week, unlike summer. It can take hours to get into Gatlinburg from Seiverville area. We stay in Gatlinburg and walk to most places we want to go. We do drive out to Pigeon Forge several times, but plan to encounter traffic. Dollywood is open. The winter light fest the Gatlinburg area is spectacular. They have a ball drop in Gatlinburg on New Years Eve. It is a lot of fun, big crowd there too. I think it is fun, but very crowed area at this time of year.

Oh yea! Thanks for this thread. We are driving (our first road trip ever!) to Orlando the day after Christmas and stopping to spend a night at Tree Tops on the way down and then one night at Oakmont in Pigeon Forge on the way back. Perhaps we should have booked the entire vacation in these areas! So cool that Dollywood will be open!

We visited last Christmas. Wyndham was beautifully decorated with hot chocolate and popcorn awaiting your arrival. Santa was there for photos with the kids. Dollywood is absolutely gorgeous at Christmas. I think it was more crowded at Christmas than it was this summer when we visited. We don't ski so I can't help you there but I don't think you will regret visiting there at Christmas. We had a great time with our 3 kids last Christmas.

Fri: 12/25/08 Dollywood for Christmas Day & See the Christmas Lights

Sorry. You won't find Dollywood open on holidays. I guess it's to give employees time with their families.

http://www.dollywood.com/dates-hours/

The lights are up for two months starting in early November. Christmas shows start then too. (From the Mom of one of the shepherds in the nativity pageant year before last.)

gateacher is right about the crowds. The popular shows fill up fast. Plan to be in line quite early.
