Don't think it matters where you stay as long as it is at the Wyndham facility. They are stand-alone units backing up to the golf course. The first time there we were assigned to a VRI condo. Nothing against VRI, I own some weeks at VRI resorts. But, we own Wyndham points, made the reservation through Wyndham, and wanted to stay in a Wyndham condo.
It's kind of a funny area. You check in here and stay way over there. There are a couple of restaurants nearby, associated with the golf course. Most other places require a drive of five miles or more on mountain roads. Watch the drinks at dinner.
Allow two days for the Biltmore to see the residence and the gardens. You can get discount tickets for two consecutive days from the Wyndham office. There is a nice restaurant on-site in the old carriage house. Good for lunch.
Concur with Chimney Rock. Quaint little town along the river and Chimney Rock itself is worth the time. The boat tour of Lake Lure is interesting.
Roads in the area are extremely crooked. We went once in a BMW X5 and I felt like I was driving a semi. Next time we took a BMW 135 convertible. Much more fun but it would be really easy to end up in the woods.
One of the things I wanted to do but we never got to is run a road called Tail of the Dragon. Google it. It is famous, notorious, etc. Lots of little crosses alongside the road.
