I have a resie for March in a 2BR unit occupancy 6.
Flights are very expensive as of right now so to offset some of the cost, we are thinking of inviting another couple who has a son same age as ours and they at both friends. We have travelled with this family before and like them.
We are family of four with 11yr boy and 8yr girl.
Now since the occupancy is listed at 6, could 4adults and 3kds be allowed? I know it adds up to 7 and the occupancy limit is by the fire Marshall code and all that stuff but has anyone tried this?
Is the unit spacious enough to accommodate? What are the chances of getting busted and kicked out?
Can we pay for additional occupancy of a child?
Thx in advance!

I would never take such a chance, occupancy levels are so strict as you know.

I guess you would be planning to charge them 1/2 the MF? How about the cost of car rental... And a big enough one to carry 7.

Could you get away with it? Probably. You said costs are tight. Are you OK paying for a hotel room for the remainder of your stay if you are caught and kicked out? I wouldn't chance it.

Aside from the obvious emergency issues, the occupancy levels also take into account comfort. For me on vacation even getting near them makes for some tight quarters at times (such as sharing one bathroom in a 1 bedroom unit with my wife and two young daughters).

Im not going to answer your questions directly either

first the floor plan> 1150 sq feet
I think with a couple of air mattresses there is enough room,

and second a resort map.
I think you could get away with it

Thanks Ron...

We are new to TS and this is our 1st time exchanging and staying in one so I wanted to see what others had to say or their experience. I have read here on tug about families carrying air mattresses.
Fights currently are pricing out at over $800/pp where we had budgeted for ~$500/pp. maybe spend $99 and rescue our week with SFX.

Thanks for your insight everyone.

Personally I wouldn't do it.

I'm not even sure how comfortable I'd be in a two bedroom with 6 people, let alone 7. We've done a 2 bedroom with 5 and what happens is that it kind of makes it hard to use the living room since someone is sleeping there. If possible, we much prefer all the sleeping be done in bedrooms. One trip we had someone with us who pretty much took over the entire living room and non of the rest of us felt comfortable being in there.

I agree with Ron. Since the 7th person is a child this makes it easier. Remember you will have boys and girls so privacy is an issue.

I have personally had 5 in a hotel room, so 7 in a 2 br is a cake walk. Yes, you will be breaking the rules. I would not list 7 people on the check-in paperwork. Air mattress will definitely fit, stayed in those units personally.
The advise from the group is to protect you and guarantee your family's comfort.
Hope this helps

Yes, you will be breaking the rules.

Is this what is important?

Are you concerned whether or not you'll be breaking the rules, whether you'll get caught and there will be repercussions, or if you'll be comfortable in the unit? Will you be worried about keeping the kids, and adults, quiet so that no one will suspect you are exceeding the occupancy limit?

As I said I wouldn't want to do it for comfort reasons, but I'm such a nervous Nellie I'd be afraid I'd get caught and that there would be repercussions.

You have to decide what you are "comfortable" doing.

Have a good trip.

Thanks for your insight everyone.

I had budgeted $650 PP for Hawaii and I'm finding from the midwest the cost to be closer to 1K pp.

I'm hoping for some deals...

We have stayed there and I wouldn't personally want to be in one of those units with 7 people. I can't stand having to step over someone else's mess - and I find it even worse on vacation. I don't live that way at home and I'm not going to live that way on vacation. These units have tight kitchens, no eating area inside (it's on the lanai) and the living room is not spacious. Once the sofa is pulled out there's not much room to move around. Ugh. Not fun, IMO. One other thing (and just trust me on this - if you ask another family, get two cars - no matter what. You will need some space away from each other at some point).

Have you looked into getting an Alaska airlines card(s) to get a companion fare? If you get two cards, you could get two companion fares for $100 each, plus you would get 50,000 miles. Another thing that has worked for us in the past was to bundle our car with our airfare using Expedia. Sometimes it's bit cheaper.

Btw, since you have kids I assume that you will be on a traditional school schedule. In our experience, you won't get any relief from airfares in the summer, or even over Thanksgiving vacation. They are just going to be high, so you may as well figure out a way to go in March. :)

This is exactly what I was trying to say. It's vacation. I want to be comfortable.

We've stayed in these units as well with 4. That's as many people as I'd want to put in one of their two bedroom units.
