I have been at Wyndham Panama City Beach this week. I was surprised to find out they do not recycle at this resort. So, I decided to research the eco-friendly Wyndham they talk about. I found this...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wyndham Worldwide has initiated the Wyndham Green program because it fits the company’s global commitment to corporate social responsibility and the environment. Wyndham Green is not just about one or many green programs – it’s a way of living and working based on our vision and values. Wyndham Worldwide understands that our business activities impact the earth, our resources and people’s lives. We will continue tapping into our green programs and green innovation ideas to conserve resources, preserve natural habitats and prevent pollution. We are adopting best practices and building a culture that continuously strives to improve and sustain our positive environmental results over time. We will work globally and act locally by:

• Developing environmental programs, products and services
• Setting environmental impact targets and measuring performance of green programs
• Working with our associates, suppliers, owners and local communities to minimize our environmental impact
• Complying with climate policies and environmental laws

Through our various Wyndham Green programs, our main areas of focus include:

• Educate, influence and provide value to internal and external stakeholders
• Reduce energy consumption and track performance
• Reduce water and energy usage and recycle
• Improve air quality
• Minimize waste by recycling and reusing materials
• Use green innovation techniques to develop new programs, products and services that promote sustainability
• Participate in local community programs that contribute to the wellness of our environment
• Implement sustainable procurement practices

I decided to go to the front desk and ask why it's not done here. The response I got was they City of Panama City Beach does not do it and they can't find anyone to haul it, plus it would cost.

So does that mean Wyndham is only green if it saves money (ie, the eco soap, lotions)? To hell with anything that would cost Wyndham money to collect/move?

Bingo! It's a nice marketing spin that makes them seem socially responsible, but it's mostly about the bottom line.

Not knowing anything about Wyndham Green, I would say absolutely YES.

They are a business, they dont care, they just want to save money. If they can do that and trumpet about how 'green' they are, so much the better to them.

No different for 95% of most businesses.

It's just like "Organic" foods. They are no more organic than most of the other foods out there, it's all about marketing. Or, like "Free Range Chickens", they are no different than a coup-raised chicken - they all end up having machines kill them and de-feather the bodies.

Well now....ain't that just a pleasant little image to conjure up...

But it does remind me to get those chicken breasts into the marinade when I get home.

I dare you to research on the recycling myth. Only a small percentage of items that's sent to be recycled is actually recycled.

Another thing is encouraging resorts to have a drop point for left over food that is stable (canned, packaged) for local food shelves. We all buy to much food, and if we are flying, it ends up in the trash. Last time I was at Grand Desert, I gave my leftover food to someone who was just arriving down the hall the evening before. They were like "what? I'm not sure..." But I explained that it was hitting the trash if they didn't take it. They came to our unit and literally cleaned us out of anything that was not already opened...

BTW: Smugglers Notch has a great recycling program, with a separate bin for paper, cardboard, and bottles. And I bet they make out pretty good on the bottle returns ($0.05 per bottle in VT), considering that after a week, there's probably around $3 - 5 in returnables per unit they clean.

I'm not saying it is a perfect world...however, Wyndham likes to brag about being green, yet they don't practice it at all their facilities. The recycling progeram must be a sales dept program...lol.

I don't think it's limited to the timeshare industry. The entire hospitality industry has wholeheartedly adopted "Green."

Mostly, from my experience, that means that hotels no longer replace your dirty, smelly (there is a reason why we shower...hello!) towels every day. They allow you to feel good about yourself for supporting their amazing environmental initiative which cuts their laundry costs in half.

While they're not using water and detergent to clean your nasty towels, they are also saving electricity ("reducing carbon footprint," etc, etc, ad nauseum) by not running the vacuum cleaner to pick up the crud you spilled on the carpet.
