WSJ Trip Report Bay Vista 8/9/13-8/16/13

It's on the map where Hospitality Car Rental is - he owns that, too. Really nice guy. Son lives in CT and is stationed in Italy. Thomas is a St J native. But close to the post office and the corner where the dock is where we saw the ambulance boat.

Here's his website: http://www.ourmarketsmoothies.com

The smoothies and ice cream are amazing and really well priced. And 3 of 4 nights he upgraded us to a large for nada. The Coconut one was incredible.

Again.....Smoothies are on the list for next year! Sounds delicious!

Where did the sail boat charter take you to snorkel?

Robin was considering one next year......I lean more towards the power boats.

I can't recall name of the little cay but they take you out to the cays around the island and drop anchor. I wanted to do the motorized version but they were only offering the sale. You spend about 2 1/2 hours on the boat and an hour snorkeling.

We used Cruz Bay water sports http://www.divestjohn.com/sailing-trips#snorkelsail

Yeah, sorry about that. The sound underwater wasn't great.

May want to turn the volume down on this one, too ;). Footage of snorkeling off one of the small islands near st j

who cares about the sound?!?...that is eactly what is sounds like when you are snorkling....and doesnt affect the video one bit...thanks sor sharing. kind of likes it...it made me really feel like i was there.

Here's the spot we were in - water on lens! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1377290874.156971.jpg
And here's as we pulled away on boat

We all enjoyed sailing on Survivan last June - the boat is moored in GCB.
I got to sail though the channel - we went to 3 snorkel spots - lunch was excellent.

Czar,

I really enjoy reading your trip journal. Thanks for all the great details.
Sounds like you have had a wonderful first trip to St John.

Is Hannah the one who used to live in Hawaii and her mom grew up in CA? If so, we also had her and my update lasted a total of 10 min! DH's name was not on the deed so he did not need to go. Otherwise, it would not happen as he refuses to go to any update these days :)

Yes, that was her. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience.

Thanks so much for the feedback - it's fun to post all of this, so glad you're enjoying. We had an AMAZING time and can't wait to go back. Huge thanks to everyone on here, esp DavidnRobin, who got us prepped so well. Our only mistake was going for just one week! I think we'll try to do at least a week and half next summer.

Capt Richard and crew (Cass and Ben) were great on the island spirit but I was disappointed that we snorkeled for such a short, overall, time and that we got back about a 1/2 hour earlier than scheduled. They were a great crew and made it fun. About 24 people on the boat, and free drinks on the way home :)

It was $60, but at WSJ rates, I recouped about $20 in drinks ;)

Our last full day was Thursday, which was also my birthday. This seemed to be the warmest if the days. There was only a slight breeze, and while we headed out to the pool early, we left around 2:30 to start getting packed and cool-off a little. We also decided to let the girls come back for an after-dinner swim.

I have to say, besides a fee cosmetic/damage issues, we loved the unit. I forgot to mention that we were surprised because they cleaned and restocked twice during our stay - Monday and Tuesday. After we came in from the sun, we realized it was the first time we were inside during the day, so we relaxed and enjoyed a couple of beers while appreciating the view. There is lots of space for the kids to run around and play in these. We got nothing packed but that was ok!

For my birthday, I decided I wanted to back to rhumb lines. We had another delicious meal, including tempura lobster tail, pad thai, and one if the most delicious pieces of fish I've ever had. We celebrated with a little key lime pie - my favorite - and then made our nightly stop to see Thomas and grab some smoothies. One thing we noticed, and my wife remarked several times about, is the was everyone interacts with each other. If you spend some time walking around, you'll notice a real melting pot, and everyone seems integrated with each other. We took our last truck ride back to the westin.

We got back, and the girls and I suited-up for a final swim. This was probably one of the most memorable parts of the trip for me. The pool was incredible quiet, and to like on your back and watch the stars was simply amazing. We will definitely do that again!

The next morning, we put our luggage out at 7:30, dropped extra stuff off at the free cycle, and then ran from a downpour to the Beach Bar for a great breakfast. Hopped on the 9am ferry and said goodbye to St. John.

A few final recommendations other than above:

For a first time group, I recommend the ferry. Next time we'll rent a jeep for the week, but even though it's small and easy I navigate, it's helpful to have bearings, and the westin ferry makes this so simple.

The 4-door jeeps have plenty of space in back - likely similar to our MDX with the third row seats down. We were worried about this, but we are actually contemplating buying one now!

Kids meals are relatively inexpensive, but most meals out will cost $35-45 for entrees.

Buying food at the St J Market is actually quite reasonable, but be aware if things that may surprise, like the $11 box of cereal my wife bought. If you have kids, I recommend bringing dry snacks as those seemed pricey.

Make sure you go out if the resort!

We survived ok with the truck taxis with three little kids. We never felt unsafe. No car seats necessary for that; however, we were glad to have the jeep for visiting the beaches since, with kids, it would have been a pain to wait.

Summer is not too hot! Beautiful time to visit.

Carry bug spray - some nights we didn't need it and then others we did. And then one afternoon we did, too.

Go snorkeling or diving!

Thank you for the trip report czar. It was good to get a rookie perspective. We are making our first trip to WSJ in less than 2 weeks. We plan to take the Westin ferry for convenience the first time, especially since our arrival at STT is not until about 6:00 PM.

Like you, we want to explore some but also just relax a bit and do little or nothing. I usually try to pack too much into a week but this time we plan to embrace "island time." And a belated Happy Birthday!! By coincidence last Thursday was my birthday also.

Thanks for all of your posts about your trip. Glad you and your family had a great time. Great pictures. We will be making our first trip in April and can hardly wait. Happy belated birthday.

Omg. That's beautiful. Listening to the night-life there is incredible. We saw chickens but no deer!

Only 344 days until we go back. Not that I'm counting ;)

Great report!

A few quick comments/thoughts:

Hannah - hard to see her as bad cop. Knew her as front desk manager for several years and she was the best!

Rhumb Lines - our favorite restaurant. Not just in St. John, but perhaps anywhere!

Building 25 - does have trees blocking the views a bunch. Top floors of 24 and 27 have the best.

Next time, consider the snorkel or sunset cruise on the Island Spirit catamaran. It's one of our favorite activities (in addition to the north shore beaches, of course).
