You'll be in the Bay Vista buildings (marked upper and lower Hillside villas on the map below) because they have the lofts. Not sure you have any chance of requesting a building, but I guess I'd ask for 24 or 25 because it's closest to the distant parking lot. Be prepared to walk a lot because the villas do not have convenient parking. Or take advantage of the complimentary golf cart shuttles.

The 2 bdrm lofts are huge. We brought another couple along and it was far more room than we needed!

We have never tried to take advantage of the food pre-stock. Food is very expensive on St. John, as expensive as anyplace I've ever gone, so we pack frozen meat to bring along. The rest we buy at one of two local grocery stores. There are plenty of restaurants in Cruz Bay, which is a short drive or shuttle ride.

Snorkeling is probably the #1 attraction on St. John. For that reason, we bring along our own snorkel equipment. Most beaches offer very easy access for snorkelers, with a very gradual slope and gentle waves. If you're a novice, Trunk Bay (entry fee required) is a great place to start. Waterlemon Bay was our favorite snorkeling site, but it's a bit of a walk to get to the beach.

Many people have recommended the Bad Kitty catamaran trip to Jost Van Dyke. You'll need a passport for this, though, because it's part of the British VI.

I'd also recommend the Reef Bay hike (reservations required) offered by the VI National Park Service. The hike is mostly in a forest so consider planning mid-week for a sun break.

1. Pack snack food, non perishables in your luggage. This always saves us lots of money.

2. Walk to St John Market right next door to the Westin. Be sure to take your 15% off coupon with you. It will be in your room in an envelope. If not go by Concierge desk and pick up one.

3. Take the Owners tour. BUT.. BUY RESALE!!!

4. Rent a car for at least 1 day and explore the island and the beautiful beaches.

5. Take me with you!!!

Not in that order. lol
Have fun!

Thanks This is very helpful! Any thoughts on the ferry? I am gathering that for a newbie the Westin Ferry might be best.

Unless you're strapped for cash, I'd go with the Westin ferry. It's very convenient and a great way to start your trip, but it's not cheap.

Besides the Westin Ferry and the ferry at Red Hook, you could also do a private ferry (min of 5). The cost is really reasonable vs the the Westin Ferry.

The other ferries are probably going to drop you off at Cruz Bay, which will also mean hauling your own luggage and taking a cab to the Westin, which is located at Grand Cruz Bay. So add $10pp for the cab ride to/from Cruz Bay and the Westin.

The Westin Breeze drops you off at the dock right in front of the Westin, and they deliver your luggage to your room.

We have a party of 6 next summer. WSJ ferry $110 pp r/t = $660

Private ferry (min of 5) $50 pp r/t = $300
Transfer to Redhook $105
Taxi to Westin $30
$435 total

For some, the $225 would be worth the savings.

Just wanted to present another option.

The Westin Breeze can have appeal. If you arrive late or depart early, they will handle all of the issues for you...even a private water taxi if needed. If it's your first time there, the security of getting there and back by a tried and true method might be comforting. With that said:

It can be a time waste on arrival, as you will sit around for sometimes several hours waiting for all the flights and people they are expecting. On departure they ask you to leave your bags unattended outide your door several hours before you need to depart.

It costs alot. Way higher than the passenger ferry or car ferry.

Personally, I plan to go every year and I never plan to use the Westin Breeze again. For the price of 2 Westin round trips and a two-day on-island car rental, I can rent a car for the week in STT and get a round trip on the car ferry to STJ.

I go to WSJ twice a year and do the car ferry. It is easy and much cheeper than renting on St. John. Sometimes I get the late flight (9 PM) which is after the last car ferry so I just take a ferry to Red Hook and then the ferry. Easy and quick.

If you don't want to drive on St. Thomas then I encourage you to take the taxi to Red Hook and then a ferry to St. John with a taxi to the resort. Much less cost than taking the Westin Boat.

Also make sure you go to the beaches all over the island. What a magical place St. John is. I'll be there next month.

When is your trip to WSJ?

We are going June 15 2012. I have read that you can rent a car in St thomas take the car barge for $50. Thanks for the breakdown. Right now we have 4 people but it may be cheaper to rent the car and take it over. Any car companies that you have used to rent?

A 4WD rented on STT is the way to go - and I have gone every way except private taxi. In addition - spend the extra $50/week and rent from Amelia Car Rental - their vehicles are essentially brand new and they will have the vehicle waiting for you curbside at STT with necessary paperwork ready to go (and organized) - they stay in contact with on departure day and will be curbside at STT for drop-off. - very professional and nice-courteous people as well. It was well worth the extra $50 for the new car and the service convenience.

Contrary to some opinion - it is not hard to drive from STT to RedHook and take the car barge (other than driving on the left hand side - just follow the flow). I wish I had did this years ago - live and learn.

btw - the car barge is $30 1-way - do not buy a RT ticket (not worth the $5 saving and you can use any barge that is waiting). There is also a $3 fee on the RedHook side for departures. You wait in your car in the car barge lot (next to passenger ferry terminal)to be directed onto the car barge. Unlike the public ferries (and taxis) - there is no additional fees for baggage. Also, you can stop by Cost-U-Less on the way to RedHook - there are signs on the road (a starfish iirc) leading you to RedHook. Essentially get over to Route 38 and follow to RedHook.

Directions stored in my iPhone with a stop at Cost-u-less (also refer to Google Map of STT to get idea of the directions below):

Turn right out of the airport and continue along the waterfront through several lights until the very end where you take a left at the light. The WICO cruise ship and Havensight Mall and Yacht Haven Grande will be on your right. A Pueblo Supermarket will be kitty-corner across the street and you'll pass by (on the left) a small KMart and MacDonalds, etc. Stay in the right lane at the next light and go right onto Rte 38. You'll go up Raphune Hill which segues into Weymouth Rhymer Highway, A couple of miles down the road you'll come to a traffic light and a big sign on the left for Market Square East. Turn in there and you'll see CostULess right there.

When you come out of CostULess, turn left and continue on Rte 38. If you need to stop for anything else go into the Tutu Park Mall which will be on your left and where you'll find the big KMart and the supermarket Plaza Extra. Continue on Rte 38 after Tutu Park Mall and at the second light turn right to continue on Rte 38 which will take you past Wyndham Sugar Bay, Point Pleasant, Sapphire, etc. and all the way into Red Hook where the ferry terminal will be on your left.

Just take whichever barge is leaving first and best advised to get a one-way ticket as they don't honor each other's tickets and you don't want to get hung up on your return trip.
****

enjoy

It takes ~17 mins to drive from WSJ to the parking lot at Trunk Bay... We can leave at 3:40pm - get to Trunk Bay when the Ranger Station is closed at 4pm (saving $7pp fee) hang out snorkling - watch the sunset (watch out for nosseums) - on the way back - loop by Woody's to-go window for Bushwackers ($1 off during happyhour) - and even swing by Starfish or STJ Market to pick up supplies. Try that with a taxi-bus.

Cost-U-Less

If you rent a car in St. Thomas and take to car ferry from Red Hook stop at the Cost-U-Less along the way. It's a BJ's or Costco kind of place and the prices for groceries, beer and alcohol are very good. Pack some plastic shopping bags to put your stuff in.

Driving from beach to beach on STJ in a jeep is my idea of heaven on earth. Definitely agree with the advice about renting on STT, stocking up at CostULess & taking the car ferry IF you have an adventurous, flexible frame of mind. It is a little bit of an adventure.

We stop at kmart for boogie boards & souvenirs.

Have the concierge make your reservation ar Zozos for bar seating at sunset. So much fun & an amazing view.

The GPS mapping feature on our IPhones worked; we used that to make sure we were on track.

Make sure you get off the Westin property and enjoy the natural beauty of he island - have a great trip!

St John

Some St John suggestions…

Delbert Hill car and jeep rental (340) 776-6637
I like them because they are located right downtown and you can park in their lot, parking can get to be a problem sometimes.

Starfish Market for Food

Restaurants
Asolare (great for sunsets)
Zozo (also sunsets)
La Tapa
Morgans Mango
Lime Inn
Rhumb Lines
Paradiso at Mongoose Junction
The new sushi restaurant in the Starfish Market Plaza surprisingly good!
Joe’s BBQ hut in the center of town (it is open air, you can’t miss it!)
Miss Lucy’s in Coral Bay for Sunday brunch
Skinny Legs in Coral Bay for the best burgers on the island

Bars

• Make sure you visit the Beach Bar- Great entertainment and Sunday afternoon Jazz jam session-great people watching, all the locals go!
• Woody’s Seafood shack
