Would you elect or exchange?

I have just been granted an extension to elect my newly purchased week for points if I wish, but have to do it ASAP:

I want the following:
2 bedroom in Harbour lake 31st Oct 2019 + 7th Nov 2019, points for these 2 weeks would be 4450.

So do I elect for 3375 points and use 1075 more points (which I have) and have the security of getting what I want

OR

Book a week for Nov 2019 (Silver Playa Andaluza 3 bedroom), lock it off and try exchange, so deposit a 2 bed & a studio. The exchange 2 bed to 2 bed should be ok, but studio to 2 bed is ambitious.

What would you do?

I think that time of year a trade is a good possibility. I would not elect points unless you are one who just can't tolerate the wait.
Yes, a two bedroom for a two bedroom would be a sure thing in my opinion. But I also would not rule out a studio for two bedroom if you are willing to play the game.

I'd do the points so you don't have to fool with the exchange or I'd try for CH, should be easier to trade up in size studio to 2 BR for an exchange. But I suspect you won't have much trouble getting the exchange either. Of course you could look online now and if it's available, go ahead and grab the exchange using the studio. Maybe hang out to the last minute before you elect. Do you have to call to elect with the extension? How long do you have?

I can’t book the week until Nov 14th and as I was pushing to elect as my week completed after the deadline I have to let them know today. We will have the kids with us so only want HL so I think the fact that we want a specific location on specific dates it’s safer to elect the points and not have to worry!

That's what I'd do. The other way you have risk, stress and pay 2 upgrade fees to save 1075 points. And if you did it by exchange, you might end up in a situation where you'd have overlap or a gap and then have to change rooms. But for exchange one approach though would be to do one week there and one week at a different resort. In that situation you'd be almost guaranteed of success for 2 BR for 2 weeks but you would have to change rooms if you changed resorts obviously and still you'd have the upgrade fee.

What I do is I plan to stay ahead in points availability and exchange options then make the reservation on points AND search for an exchange. Then as I match exchanges, I cancel the portions of the points reservations that are applicable. I did for 3 weeks in HI for a group of 15 this way this past July. I started with a points reservation for Maui for a 1 BR (just us that week), 3 units at Ko Olina (1 owned, 2 on points) and 3 units at Waiohai all on points. I ended up with a 1 BR Maui, two 2BR + studio Ko Olina and 3 units Waiohai all on exchange except the third week at Waiohai. Rearrange the points into existing reservations for Aruba to use the oldest ones first so no risk of losing points and cancel the Ko Olina week electing points. I've done the same for a portion of the Aruba trip but not all.

Everyone's personality is different - since you asked, I would turn your weeks for all years, 2019 and 2020 into destination points and book what you want now. If you need to borrow those extra, they'll come from 2020. You'll be all set, won't need to worry whether, or if, you get the 2nd week. Life is too short to worry about this - "a bird in the hand"... Good luck...

I would elect points. I would not risk not getting what I want if I had such specific needs.

Thanks guys for you opinions, I elected!

A good choice for European weeks, as they have a relatively high points allocation.
I have also just elected our Silver Playa Andaluza 3 Bedroom.
I nave booked our Caribbean weeks to exchange though, as they have relatively low points allocation, whilst they are excellent Interval traders.
