We are looking to bump up our HGV membership from Preferred+ to Premier. Need 10,400 points to do so.

Looking for the groups input as the best way to do this.

We did look into secondary market timeshare, but we understand or were told that the points do not count towards Status Upgrade.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and comments.

My suggestion: Don't.

Buy resale which, as you said, won't count. You'll save a ton of money and miss out on negligible added benefits. JMO, though.

Cheers.

You will need to buy developer to do this in MAX. You will need to run the numbers as to whether the cost of retail will be offset by the benefits of the higher elite tier. Usually it does not. If you just need the points, buy resale.

I agree with @CalGalTraveler/@dayooper and basically "run the numbers" looking at with benefits you will get moving from preferred+ to Premier vs. what it will cost. I would estimate that it will cost you $50K to $70K for those additional points. Only you can decide if that additional level will be worth it. After the Premier tier, there will be Premier+ and then Centum.

And since you can buy an additional 10K+ points on the resale market for $5K or less, you have to look at the additional benefits of going to Premier vs. an extra $45K - $65K in your pocket.

If you decide the extra elite tier is worth it for you, this is what I would do to avoid paying full retail for 10,500 points.

Buy a resale week for < $5k that has high original retail value that can be traded into HGVC (no affiliates, no managed properties because you cannot trade those in.).

Then go to a Retail presentation and trade in that unit for the full retail value of the unit and then pay only the difference. This will bring your price tag down to $10 - $30k.

A good resale deed to buy is W57 8400 point studio. You can get those for $3000 or less. It will credit toward developer trade-in at $50k - 100k depending how recently the seller bought from the developer. The more recent the higher the trade in value because it is based on the original purchase price.

Note that certain offices have minimum sales requirements and some cannot sell all inventory so try to deal with HQ in Florida or NYC because they have access to all inventory. There may be other offices that have full access as well but IDK what those are.

I just upped from Max Premier+ to Centum and echo the sentiments above. The juice ultimately is not worth the squeeze. Even with creative resale deed to retail deed arbitrage and dollar cost averaging, there is no scenario where it becomes “worth it” just to reach that status. However, others have pointed out, astutely, that value is different to everybody. I liken this to an expensive luxury car that depreciated 95% after leaving the lot. Still fun to drive and to own, but not a great investment. So build your ownership how you want to use it and if those goals correspond to achieving status, then that is a bonus. But the status, itself, should not be the main goal.
