I made a mistake a couple weeks back, booking a Vegas week for an annual event next year while I still have 3400 points sitting in the 2012 year. The result was I ended up with 3400 still in 2012 and 3900 in 2013. This is a problem because while we can rescue the 3400 points into 2013, we really were thinking that 2013 will be the year where it makes sense for us to convert HGVC to HHonors points for travel we'll be making to places without timeshare locations, and rescued points from 2012 aren't eligible for that.

What I should have done was rescue the 2012 points first, then booked the week which would have consumed the rescued points, leaving us with most of 2013 eligible to convert to Hhonors. Then it hit me thinking about it last night.

HGVC offers free on-line changeable reservations to existing bookings. So, I reduced the 1 bdrm 7 night stay in platinum time to a 3 night studio in gold time (480 points). Next, rescued the 3400 points so they were in 2013. Once done, changed the booking back to the original 1 bedroom 4800 point week and the system automatically used the rescued 2012 points first, leaving us with a little over 7000 2013 points to do with as we like.

While converting them to Hhonors certainly doesn't get us the most bang for our buck, it does work favorably with our travel plans & combined with the little operation I performed above, continues to make me pleased with the flexibility of the HGVC system after several years of ownership!!!

UWsurfer,

Thanks for the insight. We are still awaiting the transfer of our HGVC membership from the previous owner to us, so I am not able to go online and play with the system. But I should be able to do so within 20 days or so.

When you rescued your 2012 points, did you do that online? Or did you make a call to do so?

I did it all on-line through the HGVC webpage.

Such a masterful manipulation of the system deserves a "HGVC Guru" status!

Just be careful using the changeable reservation option

I took advantage of the great Hawaii airfare ($435pp roundtrip EWR-HNL nonstop on United :)) and booked a January stay this week via Club season.

I almost lost it when I tried to use the changable reservation option to extend my stay by releasing and rebooking :bawl:. It took over ten minutes before my original reservation appeared online to rebook . The club counselor couldn't see it as well. I was waiting to speak with a supervisor when it reappeared . Thank goodness the club counselor saw it and immediately grabbed it for me. I also saw it flash on the screen but the club counselor grabbed it before I did.

OMG, I'll never do that again with the Lagoon Tower until we get a replacement system. :crash:

I will note that as it was Las Vegas I was working with there was plenty of availability as far out as I was & I also checked this prior to moving/releasing my original booking. As you note in high demand or closer to check-in dates this needs to be done with caution.

The roundtrip airfare in the $400s started in mid Sept for travel beginning in Sept 2012 and completed by March 2013. (see details below).

I received the following weekly alerts from airfarewatchdog.com.
Starting in Sep 2012 - $465 RT Newark to Honolulu nonstop United Travel by 12/14/12
Starting in Nov 2012 - $435 RT Newark to Honolulu nonstop United Travel by 2/28/13
Starting in Jan 2013 - $415 RT Newark to Honolulu American & United Travel by 2/28/13
Starting in Feb 2013 - $425 RT Newark to Honolulu nonstop United Travel by 3/18/13

It's not uncommon to see low fares during non-peak periods in the Fall & Winter but most of the availability required traveling on a weekday (vs a weekend).
