Woman arrested for selling millions of fake Kona coffee for almost a decade:

The market is too unsophisticated to notice. Peets, Starbucks, Dunkin, CoffeeGuy, whatever, people just glom on like they do with phones: iphone.

No one knows what they are drinking, they just go with the brand name. None of these people suspected or knew they were not drinking Kona coffee, for over a decade. They either liked it or not. All this KONA coffee is a marketing joke. It is not any better, and if it is no one knows.

Why is this under Vacation Travel Information? Wouldn't the TUG Lounge be more appropriate?

After more than several decades workers noticed the coffee bags were actually from other countries

people can't tell the difference --- it's like Olive Oil !!!

Or cigars and wine.

This woman was begging to get caught, and keeping all that cash laying around, using PayPal...

People traveling to the BI might want to know how long the "buy local" schemes can last, even when it seems to be sort of an open secret that it is going on.
state Department of the Attorney General investigated allegations in 2019.
June of 2021, Johnson told state investigators that she bought coffee from the same farm and used the same roaster for 25 years.
The farm had shut down in the 1980s! Hello?
The roaster denied doing business with Johnson and told investigators they had not roasted her coffee for decades! Hello?
2019, 6 yrs ago

I wonder if she sold at costco?

I see these same concerns at Farmer's Markets. Is the produce REALLY from a nearby farm? Or was it procured at a grocery store and resold?

While I mostly agree with you about iPhones (but that is just our opinion, man),
a) unsophisticated is clearly the wrong word here and shows the lack of intellectual sophistication of the speaker more than saying anything about the end products
b) I may have never read a thought that so clearly cannot differentiate between Opinion and reality.
It is not any better, and if it is no one knows.
:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: and now not knowing the difference between physics and metaphysics.
BUt thanks for reminding me that Woody Allen got kicked out of college for cheating on his Metaphysics test.

What about Olive Oil? Isn't she Popeye's girlfriend?

Never drank coffee but apparently Panamanian coffee is the best in the world. Kona has nothing on it. So I hear.

A whole lot of "Why would I drink expensive red wine from Bordeaux, France when Thunderbird will get me just as drunk for much less money?!"

Not unexpected. But some people truly enjoy coffee -- same as wine. Some people come here just to try the coffee. And why limit to just one region? Ka'u coffee is sitting in warehouses, unsold. So there are deals to be found. A lot of people prefer Ka'u to Kona. I'm a big fan of Kenya AA as well. Quality coffee for not much more than Folgers. (Which is pushing $20 these days, so may as well buy better quality.)

And for the people who just want caffeine, Cafe Bustello is the cheapest way to get there.

"What's the word?"

Always funny when top wine drinkers cannot tell the difference between two very different price points.

When I go to a farmers market on WA, I'm pretty sure that the banana and oranges are not locally grown.

yes! ... Oyl

Admittedly I just want the caffeine so I guess the word for me is "K-cup" with a spoon of freeze-dried espresso

I remember the big island hotels always had 100% real Kona ....... ( tariff free)

I do enjoy nice coffee, and do usually pick up what is labeled as Kona or Kauai-grown coffee while on vacation in Hawaii. Some are better than others, and yes, there is a certain amount of trust required that you are actually getting what it's supposed to be. I would be less trusting of a random or unknown seller on Amazon. I have purchased some from Scoop, and enjoyed it.

Aside from outright fraud, you have to be careful to read the label. There have been several instances when I have been at a coffee farm or local market, and the product is labeled as Hawaii coffee, but upon closer inspection, it turns out to be grown elsewhere and simply processed or bagged in Hawaii.

I try to buy decent Olive Oil, balsamic vinegar, etc, but I will freely admit that its easier to recognize taste profiles I don't like, but it can be difficult to difference between others.

Vendors at the Hilo and Kailua-Kona "farmers" markets get caught all the time selling Mexican mangoes and avocados at Hawaii prices. The first clue really should be that these vendors look like they have never used a shovel in their entire lives. The second clue is that there are still "Produce of Mexico" stickers on the fruit.

This deserves more than a slap on the wrist (they don't even get that). It erodes trust. And visitors aren't getting value for their money. This makes it harder for actual farmers to sell their produce at the legitimate farmers markets. The real farmers markets happen one day a week. And scruffy-looking people sell produce that doesn't look NEARLY as good as what's found at Safeway. But it tastes better.

The best tomatoes are grown in Waimea. That means the best marinara, the best BLTs, the best caprese salad and the best salsa are here, too. Most people will never experience that because they go with convenience over quality. If people can't afford any better, that's different. If people simply don't care, and want to eat Costco pizza three meals a day, that's also different.

The rest are similar to the Europeans who visit the US and then demand that we're incapable of brewing decent beer.

"Well, what beer did you drink?"

"Bud Light. It was effin' close to water!"

"You didn't try anything else?"

"No. Just Bud Light. Horrible stuff. Why do you people drink it?"

When I was much younger
I could never tell the difference between what was claimed to be "Maui Wowee"
And product that was grown from seeds brought back from the Vietnamese Highlands in the area around Mendocino
It really came down to availability and price
Been plenty of scams run on wine buyers
The illegitimate claims abought locale and pedigree have always existed

Most buyers of everything are not sophisticated
It is maddening when you have the real legitimate product
Watch some dufus make false claims about the source
Undercut your product and sell out while you are left hanging
But there are some things about our society that suck
Liars and scammers are in that category

People in general are not aware and do not care. This is how retail sales of TS happen after all. No research. No thought. Apply that to buying coffee, it only matters how appealing the sign is - it can lie or whatever, that is mostly fine. Now you'd hope there were truth in advertising laws with teeth, but we know that isn't the case. We'd prefer to imagine that not only do people make informed decisions, they are expert enough to know and on the ball enough to notice that iced dessert and ice cream are actually different things. At least there we say that they can't just call it ice cream no matter what. We allow so many euphemisms and vague language and made up "awards" or "certifications" that in reality no one knows what they're getting without having an independent lab involved. And you see it with stuff like "packaged in Hawaii" or "Made with Hawaiian beans*" and you eventually find it has 1% Hawaiian beans - and that's if they're being technically truthful. I have seen it happen with TV sizes. It used to be 50 inches, so the diagonal was 50 inches. Now it's 55 inch "class" which can mean 51.5 inches to 55 inches from what I can tell... I think the same thing applies to Subway "Footlong" - it just has to be over 11 inches.

Do you mean inside Costco via Costco buyers? Or someone outside Costco? There was a lady known as the Coffee Lady recently selling outside Costco. Her Kona Coffee comes from Ahi Wai Farms in Captain Cook. I thought she was legit and have heard people talk about her for years as in this article. Is she legit and is it 100% Kona Coffee @ScoopKona or anyone? $23 a pound.
