We just wanted to thank everyone thier tips and hints for our first trip to Maui. We had an absolute blast! The resort is beautiful and Maui is spectacluar!

We could not do everything we had planned, so it looks like we'll have to go back.....darn.

I am not going to right a trip report, there is anough out there already. But if you have any questions about our trip, just ask. We took a ton of pictures, I have over 1100 and our friends took about 850. We did lots of snorkeling, one excursion, took the trip to Hana (went all the around too), saw the sunrise on top of the mountain, and saw the sunset everynight!

We ate at Mama's Fish House and Sensei Sushi Restaurant. We went to Feast of Lele luau too. The rest of the nights we cooked on the grills. Drank our Costco bought beer, wine and rums!

To all those who own there, Wow.....what a beautiful resort you own. For everyone else, take the opportunity to go to WKORV when you get the chance.

How was the long flight for you?

Was this your first trip to Hawaii?

How long until you go back again?
 
We will be there in a few weeks (unless work kills me first...) - these make me want to be there NOW! thanks.

Your Robin and mine have the same foggy mask syndrome... what's up with that?!
No mater how much I defog hers - it is always foggy - warm face?

Our flight time was 11.5 hours with an hour lay over in Phoenix. The flight back was alot worse. Our return flight was canceled. We had to catch a flight to Honolulu, then to Phoenix and one to Baltimore. We left 8:30pm sat, arrived back home at 4:30pm Sun.

It was our first time to Hawaii and the first for our friends too.

We are already talking ab out going back in 2010 or 2011. Next year is all booked out, so we'll have to wait and see.Next time I would like to do 10 days or more.

Sooooo, how would you compare Hawaii to St. John? As you know, we're headed to St. John in January and we don't know what we'll do if we love it as much as we love Hawaii! The flight and time zone variable is sure a lot kinder!

Really tough to compare. St John is very small, when compared to Maui.

Maui has a everything you need. Amenity wise, its like being at home. There are shopping centers, grocery stores, Walmart, K-Mart, restaurants of all types......everything just cost more then home.

St John on the other hand, is more of a tropical escape from life. Lots of natural, undisturbed beauty. There are no shopping malls, no category retailers.....just island time.

Shucks. I DON'T own in Hawaii.

I guess my mistake was not marrying a woman named Robin!
 
One thing is for certain (other than what our wives see in lunks like us...?)...

Hawaii and St John are completely different vacation spots - the only commonality is that they are both tropical, no passport is needed, and both use US currency. However, STJ is way more tropical than HI, you should bring a passport to STJ (in case you want to go to the BVI), and things cost more in STJ (except rum and jewerly are cheaper).

I would not choose one over another - (I mean STJ and HI - not Robin's) - and both are great in their own ways (STJ/HI and Robin's) - lol
 
There is a small turtle that lives right in front of the WKORV-N - we saw him nearly every day. I have seen him 2 ft. off the beach!
 
question about the road to hana

We will be going to Kauai and Maui in May and were planning on doing the Road to Hana. We have done it before but never drove all the way around because we were worried about the rental car agreement. Now I am reading that it shouldn't be a problem and that it's just gravel. Since we heard it just reopened we are again thinking about going all the way around. Did you have a car or SUV that you took around? We will have a minivan and just would like to hear first hand if it is safe to drive a rental vehicle around. Did you ever feel like you would hit bottom? Thanks a lot.

We had a big SUV, extended version. First, its not bottoming out you have to worry about. You don't get above 10 mph. Its the turns and cliffs. The road is unpaved in sections, but we felt fine in our truck. There were other cars on the road too.

I went around in a minivan before the earthquake that closed the road. At no time did I feel the van could get stuck or hit bottom. As a matter of fact, the paved portion after the dirt/gravel road was less comfortable to drive on. The road is narrow in some places, as tomandrobin show, but not particularly rough or hard on the vehicle. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the views are very different on the south side of the island. Making way for two cars to go by each other is the only difficulty and really not that hard to do.
 
We really enjoyed the ride and views too. So different, and yet still beautiful. Watch out for the cows! I think that is the biggest worry on the last half of the ride.

We left at 7am for Hana and arrived back at the hotel at 7pm. Its a long day, but it was worth it for us. On hind sight we should have left at 5:30am. We also but the cd and got a print out from the WKORV concierge staff for the ride. Between the two, we had a wealth of information on the different stop points along the road. Do not just drive it without some sort of guide, there are very few signs or markers. Also, if you are going to stop and see the falls wear hiking shoes or tennis shoes....no flip-flops or sandals.
 
Thanks a lot for all the information and the pictures. I think we will definately try it this time and go all the way around. I thankfully won't be the one driving!!! One more quick question. Do you feel it took longer going all the way around or turning back around the Seven Sacred Pools and going back the way you came from?

I think it is faster to go all the way around because there is zero traffic once you get past the Seven Sacred Pools.
 
Tom - the pictures you posted look like the drive around West Maui to me. Are you sure they are from the Road to Hana?

LOL...Those were taken after we left Hana and the seven sacared pools, heading back to the resort. We went all the way around, since the bridge is now opened back up.
