We’ve had 4 security cameras at various locations outside our house for close to 10 years now and are looking to replace them. The main issue is that the software is awkward and difficult to use when we want to review video, but the picture on at least one camera is not as clear as it should be.

We want wired ones again, if we can find some that would use the wires that already run through the attic, but I guess we’d consider wireless if that’s a better option nowadays and reliably produces clear video. The recording and retrieval software is the most important component, though.

Any suggestions on what to look for? Additional factors to consider? Brands to look at or to avoid? We have access to Costco and Sam’s as well as other retailers.

TIA!

The primary advantage of wired security cameras is the fact a Wi-Fi blocker cannot be used to disable them
Other than that I have nothing else to offer
It has been 15 years since I set up my last set of security cameras

Check out the Unifi Protect system. I don’t have first hand experience but when I was looking for an upgrade to my Arlo system, I remember it being on the top of my list for camera quality and UI ease of use

Second the recommendation of UI products.

Otherwise, Ring, Eufy, and others are perfectly fine.

As for your 10 year old wires... check exactly what type of cables they are - Cat5e? Other? If you get a PoE camera you'll need 5e at minimum.

I use wireless that are integrated with motion lights, and there is no subscription costs for the service like Ring. Purchased at Costco, FEIT is the brand.

I have had Lorex (wired) for many years. My husband had to replace one of the cameras a few years ago. Have no issues unless Wi-fi is out. Also have Ring door bell. Don't know much else about the system. Not much help.

If you currently have a wired system there is a possibility the wire is supplying the power to the camera.
If you switch to a wireless, you will have to consider how you will power the cameras.

Yes, most of the wireless seem to be battery powered and a few are solar powered. That’s another reason we hope to stay with a wired system.

We use a combo of wired and wireless at our two locations. We subscribe to Ring and have been very happy with their cameras. Due to my age and other medical problems we recently decided to go wired on our flood light motion camera over the garage door. Best decision I’ve made in awhile! Climbing a ladder to change a battery when low was becoming ridiculous. We also have some battery operated units that need their batteries changed every 90 days or so. But, since they are reachable from ground level it’s a simple process. We also have the Ring monitored security system so it all lends together smoothly.

We have Ring indoor and outdoor cameras. Great peace of mind when we are gone. Yearly monitoring fee is $109. Solar mounted by our farm buildings and wired close to the house. It's nice to be able to see it snowing and how much we get while in Florida :)

Any of the Ring cameras can be hooked up to power, so that you don't have to change the batteries. If there is not power close, they can be hooked up to a small solar panel that will keep the battery charged. As for reliability, I have been very happy with my Ring cameras. Quality is very good, including night vision. You could probably use the existing wires for power and still use a wifi camera if you wanted.

I need to get some wireless camera for my condo unit, are there any out there that are lower cost per month, as I'm getting ready to retire in a few years I want to ensure I'm keeping costs down.

There are many inexpensive cameras, but you do get what you pay for. You might want to wait for Black Friday sales. Check out eufy.com, and Costco, etc.
