Windows 8 Users - Windows 8.1 Now Avail for Download!

Now the 8.1 RT release is such a mess it has been pulled.

And anyone has to ask why this is a product line & company to be avoided if possible? It never gets better.

Its back up and available.

I avoid Apple at all costs because their map program didn't work. Various Mac operating systems have had numerous problems over the years. Google is fragmented I am sick and tired of buying phones that can't be upgraded to their latest and greatest o.s.

Do you also avoid auto manufacturers who have had a recall over the years? I mean, really...at some point you have to move on. The map app on iOS works fine for me, though I rarely use it. I also have other apps that offer a similar function, so it's not like Apple is stopping you from using their devices for this reason.

The phones will run the latest software for the most part. It's the carriers that limit the software updates of Android phones.

This is one of the reasons that more folks need to extract their heads from their behinds and stop buying subsidized phones. There's no reason a carrier should have influence on software updates. Not to mention that consumers are paying $600-$700 over a 2 year contract for $300 worth of hardware.

Regardless, you can just buy a Nexus phone. They always run the latest version of Android. The next iteration of Nexus phone (Nexus 5?) should be out near month end and supposedly will be only $349 (unsubsidized) for the 16GB version.

Sorry, I was just being sarcastic in response to our resident Microsoft hater.

Now, now... he's prolly down at the iStore with the rest of the fan-boys. I hear there's a rally there today... :)

I assume you mean me. And nope, I don't do that. I'm at a timeshare this week, though I did drive by an Apple Store today and it was crowded...

Yes, the update for 8.1 on the Surface RT is back online (it was never pulled for non RT devices).

If you're not seeing the update in the store, follow these steps:

  • Start - Run: wuapp
  • Make sure all available updates are installed. Reboot if prompted
  • Start - Run: wsreset
  • Go to the Store.

I downloaded today and it is excellent. I thought outlook would be part of the download but it wasn't. It isn't in the store ether.

There are few purer hatreds in this world than Carolinian against RCI and timeos2 against Microsoft.

I had gone to Settings > Update and downloaded a boatload of updates. Then when I went to the Store, there was 8.1 calling my name.

Ever since I installed 8.1 on my desktop, my Canon printer seems messed up... It won't print docs from the net -- I have to copy them into MS Word. It also won't run the scan utility... msg. says "connect computer."

Canon suggests that I remove the printer, delete the driver and scan utility, then reinstall it, but I haven't had time yet.

Canon's recommendation will likely work. That is usually the first fix for these kinds of issues.

The panels are a Microsoft idea of how to do OS X launch pad "better." Microsoft has stores, a music shop, an App store. Looks like Balmer really tried to clone Apple.

It should be on your machine if its a RT device.

Start typing Outlook on the Start screen and you should see Outlook 2013 show up in the Search panel on the right.

iTunes doesn't work...also can't change 'OWNER' on it

I got a new laptop for an employee and have spent hours setting it up. Came with 8.0 and when I upgraded to 8.1 it took a very long time. I takes hours to learn how to work the tiles and I find I just keep going back to the Win7 look.

The laptop I got was a return, but had been opened...but I can't change the name in the upper right hand corner from OWNER to my company name...or anything. Any ideas?

Also...iTunes won't work. I googled it and it's a major problem all over the place apparently. Guess Microsolft doesn't like Apple stuff.

To change the user name go to the control panel and click these options:

Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts\Manage Accounts\Change an Account\Rename Account

Preferably, you'd want to create a new user with the name you want with these options:

Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts\Manage Accounts

If you create a new user, it will create a home directory that matches the user name, causing less confusion down the line.

I don't have any Apple devices so I avoid iTunes and can't help you with that one.
