Hey everyone,

PSA for all of you running Windows 8. Windows 8.1 is now available to download, for free. Lots of good stuff in this update! :)

Make sure your up to date with all of your Windows Updates and then go gett the update by visiting the Windows Store on your device. It will be the Spotlight item in the store.

Note: If you don't see it in the Store, open a command prompt and run wsreset to clear your Store cache.

After you install, if you want to check out some new apps that yours truly was apart of, feel free to bring up he following apps preinstalled. ;)

OK, I finally purchased a smart phone and did so end of April. I got the Nokia 920 Windows because I thought it had an excellent camera. I am glad to see that I am right on some issues (smart phone is smarter than me).

That being said, does the phone have windows 8 (I see a lot of tiles on the screen) and thus does it qualify for the free update?

The 920 is running Windows Phone 8 mobile OS. This is for tablets, laptops, and desktops running Windows 8. :)

I downloaded 8.1 two weeks ago (from the developers site) and installed it from scratch on my desktop and laptop. So far the only app I like in TileWorld is the weather app's radar map. Except for that, everything I use is in the old interface. With the help of a $5 utility, it looks just like Windows 7, but with a fancier task manager. I like what the NY Times article had to say about 8.1.

Unfortunately, all of it is a giant exercise in rearranging crackers on plates on deck chairs on the Titanic.

Seems that the NY Times has it nailed.

Would RT be getting the 8.1 upgrade? Isn't is a scaled down version of the full Windows OS?

Did you install all the available updates from Windows Update before going to the Store? You cannot upgrade to 8.1 without all WU up to date.

Do the following:

Start - Run: wuapp
Make sure all available updates are installed. Reboot if prompted
Start - Run: wsreset
Go to the Store.

And yes, the upgrade is for Surface RT, Surface Pro, and any other desktop, laptop, or tablet you have Windows 8 installed.

f you get a new PC or tablet, it will have Microsoft's new OS pre-installed. Here's how to get the OS on an older or custom-build machine.

The Top 6 New Features in Windows 8.1 - by Michael Muchmore/ PCMag.com

Microsoft's just-launched Windows 8.1 upgrade is way more than a service pack, even though it's a free update for Windows 8 users. Here are its coolest new features.

My update to WIN 8.1 was pretty easy. The store said it was available to install, and voila. I am loving Win 8 so far. The less I have to mess with the old desktop mode, the better. He new tile interface is pretty awesome.

8.1

Thanks for advice. I got one laptop to upgrade from preview. Still working on the other one.

I love it and my winphone.

Stephen

Thank you for the info. I just downloaded the upgrade to my Windows 8 Laptop.

I have no use for the tile interface.
IMHO, there was nothing wrong w-Win7's, which I still have on other 'puters.
They just wanted to emulate tablets & smart phones, as if.

I'm thinking the tiles are silly to those without touch screen computers.

Don't Even Bother Trying to Upgrade to Windows RT 8.1 Today - by Marc Perton/ Engadget.com

If you're one of the few people who own a Windows RT tablet (don't all raise your hands at once, now), you just got a chunk of your Saturday back. Citing a "situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1," Microsoft has pulled the upgrade from the Windows Store. The company hasn't supplied an explanation, though various sources cite boot configuration issues that can cause the update to fail. Microsoft says it is "working to resolve the situation as quickly" and "will provide updates as they become available."

And more importantly: Bricked Your Surface RT With Windows 8.1? Let's Fix That! - by David Murphy/ PCMag.com

"Uh oh.

Following reports that its recent major update to Windows 8 has adversely affected those running some of the company's Surface tablets, Microsoft has officially pulled the Windows 8.1 update for Windows RT devices until further notice.

Here's the official statement from Microsoft, posted to its community site:

"Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available."

In other words, now would not the time to try and finagle some creative method for getting the Windows 8.1 update on your Surface RT tablet. And we should definitely clarify – unlike some reports from earlier today, which might have jumped the gun a wee bit in suggesting that Microsoft has pulled the Windows 8.1 update entirely, Microsoft is only actually targeting the Windows 8.1 update geared for Windows RT devices. That's not your traditional Windows 8-equipped desktop or laptop PC. On those, update away. "

Windows 8.1's Little Changes Are a Huge Improvement- by Adrian Covert/ Tech/ Money/ CNN.com

On paper, the list of changes that Microsoft made to Windows 8.1 don't seem all that major. No, the app tiles aren't gone. Yes, the Start button is back, but not exactly as you remember it.

But it isn't until you actually start using the latest version of Windows that you can appreciate the big benefits of little tweaks.

I don't agree with Pogue that Windows should be split to have the classic feel for desktops and "Tileworld" for tablets. The issue is really around whether the device is touch-enabled or not. I could see the default installation to be "Windows 8 Classic" for computers with no touch screen and "Windows 8 Modern" or some other name for the desktops, laptops, and tablets containing touch screens.

It works fine with a mouse -even better with a mouse that has a built in touch pad so you can use windows 8 easy touch controls. Many of these are sold at amazon best buy etc etc.

Now the 8.1 RT release is such a mess it has been pulled.

And anyone has to ask why this is a product line & company to be avoided if possible? It never gets better.
