Why would you not get tested for Covid-19

In our location we have had a couple recent issues with mandatory testing. One in a prison and one in nursing homes. People have fought back not to get tested. I can't understand why someone would refuse.

So, I ask this question.
If you could get tested for Covid-19 would you?
If you could get tested for Covid-19 antibodies would you.

If not, what would be your reasoning?

I would get tested for the antibodies but not for Covid. I do not have any symptoms of Covid and I do not like someone sticking something up my nose. If I had symptoms, I would go through with that but the probability of actually having it right now is quite low.

Like the others, because I am not sick, haven't been around anyone that might be, and definitely don't want swab so danged far up my nose. I would like to wait for the spit test. I am also ok with finger prick blood test.

Antibody test? No real point to that, either.

Why might someone else not want to be tested? Many possible reasons, including privacy. Could be fears of "getting in a database", something people got uptight about when it was discovered that DNA info does not stay private. If I were somewhere that had undesireable treatment of those who are sick, I'd want to not be counted among the sick. I also don't want to pay for it.

If I worked in a hospital, nursing home, prison, or meat packing facility (or other such hot bed)I would get tested even if I had no symptoms.
I would get tested even with no symptoms working at a regular essential job - like grocery store, as long as there are enough tests for everyone with symptoms too.

Quest in my area is offering an antibody test, you have to pay out of pocket $119 but my understanding is that there are a large number of false positives. I don't know the numbers but I get the impression that it is 70% or less accurate. It's a little too pricey for that level of accuracy in my opinion. If it were 90-95% even at $119 out of pocket, I would probably go for it.

Our local 911 systems are keeping COVID 19 positive household tracked in their databases so first responders are prepared if they get called to that home for some reason.

yeah, not sure I want my medical info in a database like this.

I would take the newer RNA Abbott labs test since it’s not nearly as invasive as the initial test that goes really far up into your sinus area via your nasal passage.

That said, given the antibodies trials are showing up to 80% of those infected are asymptomatic, I don’t see it as productive to RNA test large swaths of the population unless they are symptomatic or unless we are leveraging contact tracing properly. The RNA tests will only test positive if you are actually contagious and are still actively fighting the virus. For those who are asymptomatic this is a relatively narrow period of time from what we know right now, and even for those with symptoms, the window is 1-4 weeks at most.

Once your body has fought off the virus - the RNA tests are no longer useful - only the antibodies tests will test positive at that point - and many of the current antibodies tests are not FDA approved and therefore have questionable false positives and false negatives.

That said, I would take an FDA approved antibodies test at any point in time. I would take an FDA approved RNA test if I was symptomatic and/or if I was exposed to anyone whom I came to find out tested positive within the 14 day window of exposure, and/or anyone identified via contact tracing.

We are now testing all hospital admissions. Mid turbinate results in 20 minutes. Still uncomfortable and makes most patients tear up.

I am happy we are testing. No sweat suit for me if pt is negative. By sweat suit I mean the blue plastic gowns you see first responders wearing over their scrubs. Sooo miserable, literally dripping wet once removed. Think Saran Wrap all over you and then working out. I swear I get out of the shower dryer. Ok TMI.

I would love an antibody test if accurate. I don’t believe I am currently infected asymptomatic or otherwise so the current test is useless for me. I get my temperature taken every day on arrival to work. They certainly can’t test us every day so no test for me unless I get sick.

I would not choose to get tested but had to be tested last week when I was admitted to the hospital for removal of a kidney stone. Thankfully it’s over in a matter of seconds. And of course I tested negative.

I would not get tested for the virus. My reason would be it wouldn't change anything at this point. If someone said I had to, I would though. Such as if I ever get to have shoulder surgery I need, I would have to get a test. We're mostly home anyway, wear masks the rare time we are out. We always sanitize, I have a phone sanitizer as well.

if I could get tested for the antibodies, I would and I would even pay. But not until they become more reliable.

I'd get tested if I were symptomatic, but it sure looks uncomfortable. I've seen videos online and it looks like they are poking your brain...no thanks!

I called 911 on myself due to symptoms, but tested negative. I spent 3 days in the hospital, and my discharge papers said I was COVID-19, even though I never tested positive for it. My PCP wants me to be tested for antibodies to see if they show I was positive. I'll let you now after the 18th if it looks like I was a false negative. I was hoping that if I had antibodies that I would not be able to contract again, but there is no consistency on this. Having the antibodies does not mean you can't get it again. Not from what I see.

I don't have symptoms, but I would like to get tested for the antibodies because we believe we had this early March after our Maui trip and a stop in SFO for one night. We got sick at the same time, about 6 days after the trip ended.

Have you even talked to your PCP? You have to start there.

Same here. I do not want a nasal swab. As of now I don't want to be tested for antibodies as well, as the last time I had any sort of cold-like symptoms must have at least 18 months ago. I also do not want to get close to anyone.

My thought is reports are many are asymptomatic. Spreading it without knowing it. If I was in a position that I was out with the general public a lot I think I would want to get tested every now and then to ensure I don't have it and unknowingly spread to family or others. A couple weeks back, DH had a very remote interaction with a party that had a Covid person in their house. (not even a direct contact with the Covid person) His employer sent him for testing ASAP because his employer didn't want it to be spread among his coworkers. He said it wasn't pleasant, but it didn't hurt, it was just uncomfortable. I appreciated knowing the person in and out of my household wasn't a asymptomatic carrier.

Glad you are doing well.

They are saying they don't know if one is immune to it if one has had COVID. Hope so.

Would love to know if you have the antibodies once tested. I keep hearing more and more, and saw a USA article this morning that they are labeling probable COVIDs as COVID - hospitals get more money. Now it has me wondering how many deaths are actually COVID. :cautious:

I would not want to test for COVID if I am feeling fine.

Would take the antibodies test to see if I have had it.

In NJ you must have symptoms and a prescription from a doctor to receive a COVID-19 test. Thankfully, I do not have any symptoms.

I will request an antibody test at my annual physical (scheduled for August).

I had to get the antibody test done yesterday because my cataract surgery will be next week. The doctor's office sent me a PDF prescription and then I had to go to the lab closest to me. That clinic was doing only Covid Antibody tests. I should get my results in 48 hours. They took a vial of blood.

Why an antibody test? I would think they would want you to take the other test to see if you are asymptomatic now?

I have no idea. It was required to get my 2nd eye done. I got the 1st one done just before all this started in early March.
