Why we Vote on Tuesday ...

You've studied the issues and cast your ballot. Now all that's left to do is bide your time until the results start coming in for John McCain and Barack Obama. To help you in that effort, we introduce a list of election fun facts for your brain-candy pleasure.

Why do we vote on a Tuesday... in November?

The short answer: We used to be a nation of farmers.

The long answer: Congress chose November because the harvest was over and the weather wouldn't be bad enough to prevent people from traveling.

As for Tuesday, people used to have to travel overnight to their polling location. (In 1845, horse was the preferred method of transport.) In an effort to avoid religious days of rest, Congress chose Tuesday, leaving Monday and Wednesday as travel days. Tuesday was voting (and horse-resting) day.

Thank you for that interesting little tidbit of trivia.:)

We also still have a school year that is built upon our agricultural past.

More Current Reason

A more current reason is because a lot of companies give their employees paid time off to go vote. Depending on were you vote and how long the lines are, you can almost have a whole day off, especially if you vote absentee.:whoopie:

Wow - I've never worked for a company that gave paid time off for voting, and have not even heard of that from anybody else. :(

Early voting

DH and I voted last Friday (Halloween). I'm still wondering who Princess Leia voted for. I wasn't sure if some of the voters in line were in costume or just eccentric. Then there were the poll workers . . . .

Just wanted to add that the results of this presidential election are history-making in more ways than one. For me, this is the first time that I am older than the president-elect.
