Why Does My New Lenovo Laptop Freeze?

In December I bought a new Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. The computer guy came in & charged me $400 to setup the new laptop, transfer files form my old desktop PC and set up my new printer. He also set up wireless.

Almost from the beginning I had problems connecting to the internet and problems with freezing. My new laptop freezes when it is shutting down and when it is starting up. So, the computer guy came back in early April & "fixed" things. Well, the next day he had to come back again because things weren't "fixed". For this they sent me another bill. I called & said that if things had been done correctly the first time back in December he would not have had to come back in April. My computer is still freezing.

So, what do you think is the problem and what should I do?

Perhaps you downgraded your OS?

If you transferred programs then that is almost guaranteed to be the problem. If you only tranferred data and reloaded fresh copies of you programs (Word, Adobe, etc) then the problem is more likely in Windows. Did you move from XP to (heaven help you) Vista? If so even the data may cause problems. If you did take Vista and are trying to use anything from the old PC including printers, scanners, other hardware or software then, again, guaranteed its a Windows incompatibility issue.

So what exactly did they attempt to do for $400? And was there a downgrade from XP to Vista involved? If so the answer is go back to XP.

John, I have Windows XP. He transferred my email & any other stuff like Wordperfect that was on my old desk top PC.
So, why is my new laptop freezing when I try to rurn it on/off?

If he transferred not reinstalled Wordperfect then thats the problem. Windows so embeds the hardware settings into itself that if you copy programs/settings even from one XP machine to another you are very likely to get hang ups and errors. If he only copied the data and reinstalled all the programs then I'm not sure whats wrong but I can tell you the way to test it is to reset the laptop to a "virgin" copy of Windows XP & see if the errors go away. If they do then the copy/transfer process is at fault - if not you have a hardware issue.

If it were mine I'd install a second drive, reload Windows & see if the problems end to establish if its software or hardware causing the glitches.

Is it freezing completely, or just really, really slow when you start it up? Can you move the mouse, but double-clicks seem to take forever to open? If that is the case it is probably related to the number of processes (usually useless applications) that are starting up every time you start your machine. Look at your taskbar next to the clock. Do you have a lot of icons there? Check them out and see what they are. If they are related to items that you don't even use, open the application and find out how you can disable auto-run on boot (usually tools..options/preferences). You can also check your Start Menu..Programs..Startup to see what is starting. Again, if you don't care about those items, right-click and delete. That is only a shortcut to the application, so you aren't impacting its functionality if you ever want to use it later. Anti-virus is also a resource hog, so depending on which one you have, it may be burying your system at startup.

If it is actually freezing, then I may have just wasted a minute of your life to read this. Sorry.

It freezes completely.....even the clock stops! Can't click on anything. The "hour glass" prevails. Then I have to press the power button a million times to get it to shut down. This all takes about 15 minutes. Then when the "power off" finally kicks in, I close the top, then open it to start anew & press the power button to re-start. Then it is ok...but what a pain. Same thing happens @ the end of the day when I want to shut down. It freezes & won't turn off. Takes forever. :crash:

OK, for complete freeze I would recommend calling Lenovo tech support to see if they can run you through some diagnostics. Hopefully you have some sort of warranty as its only 5 months old. My co-worker recently had a freezing issue with his $4000 Dell XPS gaming machine (I think he's bonkers) and it ended up being bad RAM.

To force a shutdown, hold the power button for at least 5 seconds. That should do the trick, but its not a graceful shutdown.

OK, Luv, I will try that. Do you think it is reasonable to dispute the bill from the company that had to come in to try to fix things....my view is that if they had done it properly December when I bought the Lenovo ThinkPad, then they would not have had to come back in so soon after the initial set-up. What do you think?

That's a tough one. I don't think it hurts to try. I would call them up and tell them that they've been out twice for the same thing and the issue is still happening and you'd like your money back for the 2nd visit. But they'll probably want to come back out and see if they can fix it completely and not charge you for visit #3.

If it turns out to be hardware, especially RAM or motherboard issue, those are tricky to troubleshoot and to know you fixed it.
