It looks like I was quietly upgraded to Gold Elite status. Looking at my online account, it shows my status as gold with only 42 nights this year. I was previously Silver Elite. I was hoping to maximize rollover nights in to 2015. This upgrade may mean no rollover and only gold through February 2016. If I had the rollover I would have achieved gold in 2015 which would have been good through February 2017.

I haven't received anything in the mail nor any e-mails about this upgrade. Looks like I need to fire off an e-mail to Internet Customer Care.

They gave it to me and looks like nights are rolled over. After my stay at my home resort this January, I have just a couple more nights to get to Platinum. Marriott Rewards is very generous. SPG downgraded me when I focused my efforts (or spending) on Marriott and Chase Sapphire.

I turned gold this year too.
I think if you have the credit card you are automatically silver so you get to gold quickly with all these exchanges.

I stayed 6 weeks at Marriott timeshares last year so I guess that's why I got it.
Now we'll see if I keep it. :p

It did help me recently with an iffy stay where they fully refunded my points I used to redeem the room and I didn't even ask. :)
They just sent me an email saying that it was a done deal.
Surprised the heck out of me cause all I did was tell the front desk that the TV's both weren't working in the room.
I didn't really care cause I only used them to watch the news in the morning but thought they should know about it and I left.

Never had that happen before without having to negotiate a deal with the manager.
Had to have been my change to gold status.

I think you might still get the rollover nights. I had the same thing happen to me but I forget if I actually earned gold or if it was given to me.

Between Gold to Platinum in 2013, when gifted to Platinum for 2014 no rollover nights.

Will be interesting what Dioxide finds out..

I doubt he will get the rollover nights.

I had the same thing happen last year. They gave me a couple of nights to boost me to gold for the year, and then wiped out all of the rollover nights.

I know I didn't earn it on nights. I have the signature silver card. Which gives you 10 nights each year. Even with that I am at 42 nights. I certainly shouldn't be Gold, I doubt I had enough in a rolling calendar to earn the status.

Are you using the card a lot

I think Marriott recently added a night for ever $3000 you spend on the card?

According to recent FT comments, when Marriott advances you a level and you are short on nights, you will NOT get rollover nights. They are all absorbed getting the new level.

Another important thing to consider, is whether or not Marriott enrolled you in "Taste of Gold" on their own. That happens too. Taste of Gold requires a certain number of nights in 60 days to keep the status.

Current levels only last through Feb 2015. Did you get a message that says "Gold status through 2015"? If not, I would be concerned that it would last past Feb 2015.

Call and ask is your best bet IMHO.

It seems like every year they have issues heading into the year-end - remember last year's status updates in late December that turned out to be errors? I wouldn't be so sure that anything you're seeing now is correct. It might be, but there's also a chance it may not. ;)

But a phone call to ask if they'll please take away the gift upgrade (if that's what this is) wouldn't hurt because if they have upgraded you, you're correct that you won't get any Rollover Nights (with 47 in your account and the Gold requirement being 50.) The Gold status, as you say, will be in effect through Feb '16 because it's what will be in effect on 12/31/14.

See this thread for other info related to year-end processing, status requirements and Rollover Nights: 2014-2015 Marriott Rewards Year-End Changeover, Status and Rollover Nights

(Please try to not morph this thread into an overall discussion of MR year-end stuff. I didn't want to merge Dioxide's unique situation into the general discussion but also don't want two ongoing threads with the same info in both. Thanks!)

Okay, it seems I didn't search hard enough for this e-mail. I found this e-mail I received back on 12/8. Must have went in to Junk and then I just trashed it.

Your Gold Elite Upgrade Begins Now
Congratulations, you have been upgraded to Gold Elite Status! Your benefits now include lounge access, room upgrades and free Internet. Book Now

We are upgrading you for the next three months so that you can experience Gold Elite Status firsthand. To extend your upgrade:

  • Stay* 6 times between 12/08/2014 and 03/31/2015.
  • Enjoy your elevated status through February, 2016.

So the question is, will this cause my rollover nights to end up as 0 since my status on 12/31/2014 will be gold and I only have 42 nights? Seems like a sneaky way to limit rollover nights if that is the case.

Yes, its a bit of scam. Moreover, if this is a limited challenge-in that you can only do it once every one or two years. Usually, the member decides to do it. As MR has selected you, this is your "turn". If you wanted to do it in 8 months, you wouldn't be able to.

I sent an email to Internet Customer Care to see what was up and if this will prevent rollover and if so that they downgrade me back to Silver.

My guess is that if it is only a trial for 3 months they should not be taking away your rollover nights.

I used to have gold a zillion years ago due to business travel which I hardly do anymore but turned gold again this year due to the cc spending and timeshare stays. I was fortunate because lounge access was invaluable when I went to Marriott in Singapore in September. Great food and drinks were plentiful throughout the day and service was amazing. I have forgotten about how different it is in Asia when compared to the US.

I also had lounge access here in the US with Starwood in October and it was pretty much a joke. Not much of spread of food, sodas and water ran out by 6:30pm. Service was bad and one of the "servers" gave us a card to leave a tip on the card to be charged to the room when there was no service (I did not even ask for anything from the server)... I thought it was really tacky.

On 9/30/14 I received an email from Marriott stating I could retain gold until next year if I stayed 14 more nights. (I only had 27 as of that date). The email said retain for few nights.

I did stay 8 nights in November and in early December I logged in to see if it was worth it for me to find a way to add on 6 more nights. When I logged in I saw a not that said congrats, your gold has been extended.

Huh?? Why?? I called MR to ensure it was in fact true. It was. Ok, I hung up and didn't question.

I really still don't know the reason why though.

The followup response to my e-mail was that this temporary upgrade will not impact my roll over nights unless I were to actually complete the six stays and be upgraded to gold through February 2016.
