On principle, I plan not to deposit or exchange any platinum reservations with II if they are treated as Gold Plus.

What are my best options to avoid giving in?

I am also planning on withholding my annual five deposits as well, which is lost revenue of at least $1490 to II (my five trades, plus the five trades into my resorts).

Options: Use, Rent, Deposit with another exchange company, Give to friends/family, let sit empty

I already put both of my 2010 weeks up for rent. II will never see another week from me as long as they go along with this.

I'll try to rent it first. If I can't rent it at my asking price, then I'll give it to a relative or friend, or deposit with an exchange company other than II...

I am also going to rent or deposit elsewhere. I won't give the weeks to II again, unless someone here reports some great exchanges.

Great! I appreciate that I'm not alone in this principled stance. Over the past two years, I have spent $7,900+ with II alone in membership fees, exchanges, getaways and guest certificates. That number does NOT include my Starwood MF or any other travel expenses. In return, we've had many absolutely incredible family vacations. I love II and Starwood for those treasured memories. Travel is a great hobby of ours and I check for travel deals everyday. We vacation 6+ weeks per year, so I can afford to make some adjustments to rent out my weeks and find other methods to plan for ourselves. I really don't want to be a vacation rental 'landlord', but 'oh well' I guess I am now. We will continue to travel, with or without II / Starwood going forward.

Today my SDO ownership is suddenly no longer about fun, but about principles and all non-SVN owner property rights. I wish it were otherwise. I am open to return with Starwood / II quickly if they put things back the way they were. Until that point, I must take a stand together with everyone else who will and also on behalf of all those who won't. Every time I've taken a principled stand in my life, I've been a better person for it.

Don't forget about all of the independent exchange companies. Also, consider a direct exchange with another owner. I have been very happy with SDO in RCI. I have a 2 br at the Wilderness Villas in Oct thanx to 1/2 of my 2 br L/O. :cheer: Dawn

My SDO is an EOY so I won't have to make a decision about how to use it until 2011. But my VCC is annual and I will be using it next year myself. In the future I will no longer deposit any Starwood units at II. If I exchange at all it will be through SFX or TPI. I am considereing canceling my II membership since I currently have nothing deposited with them. I don't see any reason to remain a member. I bought all my units with the intent to use them myself so that's probably what I will do. It will save me a bundle on exchange fees.

I might be willing to "guinea pig", waiting to see school calandar year for 2010-2011. We are supposed to have a mid March break with Easter falling so late (4/24/11). Lakeside Terrace here we come!

I have plenty of time to decide.

I've been ready to go with RCI since last year, LT is dual affiliated, but I'd have to do some more research on RCI resorts and areas first.

I'm moving over to RCI with my non-SVN units. I'm not paying for a seperate II account that I have no control over.If that dosen't work I'll go independant.

You need to reserve a prime ski week, like week 7 or 10, for LT, and RCI will be happy to give you top trading power, I think. They should.

You should be able to get something really great with a prime ski week.

With RCI, it's a crapshoot. What week did you deposit? I have Easter week at SDO in II right now and I see great stuff with it, but this was deposited before the decision to disallow depositing our own weeks.

We should have all known this would happen, especially when it became difficult to just get II to take the weeks we have reserved. It was a foreshadowing of sorts.........

With MFs of $2500 a year now, I can't see ever depositing my WKORV unit anyway. However, if Marriott's points program pisses off enough resale owners, RCI may be the unwitting beneficiary of all of our collective angst.

I will cancel my I.I. membership.
I will also advise all my non-SVN Starwood clients to not enroll, or cancel existing memberships in favor of the boutiques.

I would never recommend RCI to them.

Fred - I think it's admirable of you to stand by your word, but don't you want to see how this all shakes out before you do something like this?

Cindy, I had a week 10 on deposit--Dawn

For sure, I will see how this shakes out.
As i have said, I do not believe it will stand.

It is not settled yet.
But, if I am wrong, they can kiss my ass.

I've called RCI twice in the past few days to inquire about becoming a member. The agents I've reached are not easy to understand. I think both times I've reached a poorly staffed call center. Is that typical for RCI or just my luck?

I was about to join RCI anyways today to try it out, but the RCI agent insisted that what I own would require me to call Starwood and have them do all deposits for me. Not this again! Is Starwood doing the same thing with RCI? If that is the case, I will pass on RCI too.

Time for me to explore renting or the boutiques.

I'm taking the long brown path and it doesn't look so promising. I'll see if they actually deposit the week I reserved.RCI says Starwood controls the inventory.Starwood says they will try their best to deposit the week I reserved but couldn't guarantee it.I'll find out what unit they deposited within 72 hrs.

But, but, but......Starwood has been telling people to use RCI, if they are unhappy about not being able to deposit their reserved week into II. I myself have been told that by Carla Smith.

Now, you're saying that Starwood will not guarantee that your reserved week will be deposited into RCI, either.

Starwood is attempting to unilaterally usurp the rights of owner's. They are in the process of taking complete control of our weeks, as if owner's rights didn't even exist.

This is just unbelievable to me. I can not for the life of me understand how every single non-SVN owner is not completely outraged! :annoyed:

How would they possibly know about the rule change until they try to deposit? It's not like Starwood communicated it to them. Nor will many people understand the implications of it, until they see with their own eyes that their trading power has been diminished. (And, honestly, WE don't even really know the implications until we have more data.)

I'm a resale owner and have never deposited anything in II because I bought where I wanted to go. I am wary of the uncertainty of II and not knowing what I'm going to get. I wonder what percentage of owners fall into that classification and what percentage buy to trade?

True, I am assuming that Starwood's new system will be what many here on Tug have been told by Starwood management. I don't choose to wait until this new system comes to fruition to voice my concern, and frustration, because I feel it is to our advantage to try and nip what we can in the bud.

If I am reacting prematurely, it is due to Starwood's lack of transparency, and how the new system is being portrayed by Starwood management.

There is enough evidence that Starwood is over-stepping, and taking control of the rights of owner's. IMO. That alone is totally egregious, IMO, and enough to make me take action.

Not sure how the various owners would stack up, but either way, I would think that they would be concerned. Situations change, and even if someone is occupying their timeshare today, they might choose to exchange it in the future.

That's true. The big problem, as always, is how to reach Owners.

You can sure see why Starwood isn't making any general announcements. No point alerting people and get even more people complaining.

Lisa, those who own higher end units (like Hawaii) are more likely to fall under this classification. Of course Starwood compounds this by only bulk deposting second and third tier weeks. I don't expect to be depositing my Waiohai but sure didn't hesitate depositing Legends Edge and even my newer DSV. :)
