Which Marriott in Hilton Head?

I was at GO last Dec during Christmas and received my Sea Pines pass for an entire week during my stay at check in. I planned to rent bikes on Christmas day (big mistake), they were closed.

I think it is good advice to check the hours of the Bike Shop soon after you get there. I was really surprised that the Bike Shop at Monarch was closed for one of the days (maybe friday?) we were there in August (Platinum season) last year ('08). It was not an emergency closing, it was per their schedule.

I kinda' doubt that the independent bike shops on the island close for a day off during peak season... :D

Eric, I've wondered that also....

It might have been from this thread. Some good information there....

So based on the other thread, only GO owners get passes unless you rent a bikes from GO when exchanging in.

Which is another interesting "anomaly" since I do not think you can buy a gate pass for bicycling into Sea Pines. I think they only sell passes to drive into Sea Pines. Someone correct me here.

And I sure would like to know under what basis the GO has access. I would almost consider buying at GO, but would hate to do so and have them change the pass policy.

Everybody checking in get a pass for a week. I was there on a getaway and got mine with no rental. But this is only for GO. No pass for Barony or Surfwatch.

Thanks for the clarification. Anyone know about the other parts of my question?

At GO you get a SP gate pass and a bike pass/w code to use at the gate. Now if you have the energy you can ride on the beach to get to SP and then the same headed back and watch for high tide or you'll end up walking the bikes. Riding into the wind takes effort and I had a pass.

You can walk to Coligny area from GO.

We stayed at Monarch last year and I kept getting mixed up with GO passes.

Sea Pine gate guards have told me more than once that you have to rent bikes in SP to ride in SP. There is a bike rental place where the Salty Dog is and also near the SP golf course. There are cheaper rentals onsite at the resorts or those companies that deliver(look for coupons). There are rentals companies on Pope Ave/Coligny area.

Monarch is also directly accross the street from 2 of the 3 Sea Pines Resort golf courses. Don't take the car over there.
Other note: Barony has a great gym and spa, especially for a smaller resort. Barony's beach is great and not crowded. Barony is also close to golf--right down the road--you can walk there, too.
I only toured Surfwatch (a walk down the beach from Barony) and the units were plush. Only one building was really near the beach; the others were clustered a relatively short walk away (actually a kind of scenic walk over a boardwalk thing). Grande Ocean was pretty big. The only thing I noted when I toured there was parking was tight. Seemed very nice.
Grande Ocean and Monarch are in the most popular beach area. Also, they are near Sea Pines (Monarch is actually IN Sea Pines). Eating, shopping, clubs, grocery store, etc are right in that immediate area. I noted both resorts had a resort lock (cypher lock) to/from the beach. There was nothing like this at the other end of the island (probably not enough "outsiders" to justify it).
I like the beach there, but am going to Heritage again this fall. I like golf better, and that's the best golf deal in the Marriott system by far. Talk about no facilites at the resort, however....Heritage has almost nothing at all. Tiny "gym", nice (small) pool, hot tub, lobby lounge (always seemed closed), etc.. They share stuff with the other nearby Marriotts, like Monarch and ???-can't remember the other one 2 blocks away--also a smaller one but bigger than Heritage.
If I win Powerball tonight I may move to Sea Pines.

I'll go halfs on the tickets and double your chances if you'll split the winnings with me. There's a couple houses just off the island that are calling my name. :)

Me to. Though I would buy in Sea Pines.

just keeping my lead

It's a first row for house for me. I heard the taxes are about 50k a year plus flood insurance if you can get it. But no one in the Northeast wins the biggie. It's always someone in the mid west or West Virginia. You all need to share the wealth.

This is my absolute favorite property along the beach, I think it sits between SurfWatch and Barony. A couple years ago it was on the market for something like 4.6 or 6.4 million; with our winnings and this economy we should be able to get it for 450K or so, don't you think? :D There's plenty of room for all of us!

Grande Ocean Sea Pines access

We are staying at Grande Ocean now. So I called the front desk to confirm what has already been said. Pcgirl is correct, the bike shop will give you a separate Sea Pines pass when you rent bikes from Grande Ocean. One pass per villa which will be good for the entire party.

Regarding the history of the access, the prior property, the Hilton Head Inn, had access to Sea Pines and paid Sea Pines regime property taxes. This was prior to the Civil War, of course. When Marriott purchased the property circa 1990, they were grandfathered the access, if they continued to pay Sea Pines property taxes. Marriott wisely made the election to do so. So we owners get to pay property taxes for the right to enter Sea Pines. I doubt there is any legal way to change it even if a majority of Grande Ocean owners wanted to.

One more plus to Sea Pines bike paths...............shade. It is of immense value in the summer. The traffic is busy but the cars are traveling more slowly which does give more safety for little children.

Sue

I am willing to share just let me know if you want the upper or lower floor and we can hire a chef.

I joke with a friend of mine who is an island realtor that if I ever hit megamillions with my weekly $1.00 quickpick my first call is to her not my husband. My second call is to a limo company to pick up my husband and after going to pick him up and stop at MA Lottery HQ we will be on the next flight to HH to preview homes.

A mortgage lender I have recently dealt with in Beaufort just told me a HHI home that was 8 million went on auction and sold for a little over a 1 million so maybe $450k is viable. I think that house is on Singleton Road area.

Sue only 5 more days and you and I will be on the island. WooHoo! We can meet for coffee/tea during the week.

In my mind Sea Pines is Hilton Head. The other areas are just the suburbs. JMO

LOL! Me too!!

I wouldn't pick any of the newer Marriotts because they are not Sea Pines. For some vacations, the resort is everything. For HH, the location is everything. Sea Pines is so lovely and any condo there feels like a beach home, not a manufactured vacation.

I may be a bit partial.

Sue,

My wife and I toured that property a couple of years ago during the Annual
Hilton Head Choral Society Christmas tour of homes. It was fun and Christmas cookies were available for the guests. The tour is usally the first Sunday in December.

Yes, Richard, I remember you posting about it. Somewhere in a folder with all kinds of misc Hilton Head stuff, I have a print-out of your post detailing the Christmas Tour. That's been on my list of "someday we will..." ever since. :)

When with the family, read that daughters, son-in-laws and grandkids, we stay at our home resort, Grande Ocean. They much prefer it for activities, pools and ocean beach; they have stayed at all the other properties in the past.
When just my wife and self, we now prefer Heritage Club at Harbour Town. Function of age.
