Hello from Long Island.

We're plannng a visit to Maui early in January 2009.

Staying at the Maui Ocean Club.

Which airport is best? Convenient?

If it is OGG what is the best way to get to the resort?

Many thanks.

Maui is not that big an island

But we are going in October, and we are flying into OGG. Come to think of it, I think there is a small airport in Hana! I wouldn't want to come and go from there!

OGG is the airport you will arrive at. The resort is about a 40 minute drive. Forget any other airports on the island, they are not suited for commercial jets.

Actually, if you are connecting through Honolulu anyway, you can fly into Kapalua airport which is about 5 minutes from the resort. It is a tiny airport and you will fly on a propeller driven puddle jumper. But, if the cost is the same and the time works for your flights, it is much closer than OGG which is the primary airport in Kahului.

Flew into the airport right almost next to the resort. A little scary with a small airport, high winds, and a prop plane, but the location cannot be beat.

Kapalua West Maui Airport (JHM) is served by go!Express. The website for go! and go!Express is http://www.iflygo.com/

Kapalua West Maui Airport (JHM) is also served by Island Air. The website for Island Air is http://www.islandair.com/

Although Kapalua is the closest airport to Marriott's Maui Ocean Club, Kahului Airport (OGG) really isn't a bad drive either. And Kahului is a larger airport with all the services of a "real" airport. There are flights directly from the mainland to and from Kahului.

The other advantage of flying into OGG is all the major stores (Walmart, K-Mart and Costco) are near the airport, so you can go shopping upon arrival to get your week-worth of supplies, thus save big bucks!

The bigger the airport, the better your choices. Cars rental, amount of luggage, flights in and out, shopping and you get to see a little of the island on the way. Regardless of where you fly into, you will really enjoy your time there...

We have always flown into OGG. We get our rental car at the airport and the drive really isn't that bad.

We are also going to be at MOC in January. We are arriving on the 11th. When are you arriving?

JFK.

Take the Van Wyck to to the GCP, to the LIE West for about 5,000 miles.

Make sure you get a rental car with unlimited miles.

I agree with OGG. We like that we can stop at Costco (literally, right at the airport), and pick up provisions for the week. The drive to MOC helps build the excitement as you drive along the sugar cane fields before you get to the ocean and up to Ka'anapaali.
Have a great trip! Hope you see a lot of whales!
