Does Barnes and Noble or Borders carry out-of-state newspapers? Just wondering where I can find the New York Times on Friday.

If you don't need an actual print copy, the easiest way to get access is to simply go to www.nytimes.com . You can register for free and have access to "today's" edition every day.

Some newsstand stores and bookstores have print copies of major newspapers, but there is usually a several-days delay for distant cities before copies are available.

What city are we talking about?

Any major US city, try a pharmacy. Better yet, a news kiosk on the street. You can always luck out with newspaper boxes. Key West, for instance, has three or four blue NYTimes boxes on Duval Street.

Of course, you can always find the Times in the airport, but many of the newsstands are past the security checkpoints...

Outside the US? Any 5-star hotel will have copies of at least the International Herald Tribune. That's basically like having the Times.

Try your local library and in our city there is a store that sells many of the major us newspapers.

Sometimes you can find the NY Times in Starbucks stores.

To answer your question directly, yes both stores carry the NYT.

But as others have pointed out, there are lots of alternatives to find the NYT.

Our public library system (Calgary, Canada) has access to an online resource called "Newspaper Direct Press Display" (Library Press Display) which has today's and archived copies (60 days back) of over 800 newspapers from around the world. I access the library's system at no charge from my desktop through the Internet using my library card number and a password.

While I don't know about your library system, I would start by calling your local branch. I think the chances are pretty good that your library subscribes to this system as well, and there's nothing easier than accessing what you want from your desktop. You can also select and print what you want (to hard- or soft-copy) from there.

I frequently pull clips and stories from papers across Canada and U.S. for publicity purposes for my professional practice, and this makes it VERY easy. We then either print off hard-copy of what we want to snail mail, or we print it to a pdf file to email to clients.

subscription services

The New York Times has begun to start subscription services to many cities outside of NY. We had the NYT for a short time. It arrived like our normal local paper, in the morning on our driveway. It's very pricey, though, so we didn't continue. So now we have to make do with the Santa Cruz Sentinel and the Register-Pajaronian. My boyfriend was annoyed that he can get the NYT, but not the Monterey Herald because they didn't deliver up to North Monterey County. :annoyed:

So I would think that the nearby Starbucks or your local library would carry a current copy of the NYT if we can get a current copy delivered to our house each day.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I really need to buy a hard copy of the newspaper on Friday. There is an article I want to keep. I guess I should head to a couple of local book stores, there are many within six miles of my house, and just see what they have. I am thinking Starbucks in Denver probably wouldn't have the NY Times. I should have looked before I asked. I will investigate, and maybe even call a few places tomorrow, just to see when I can get that issue.

Thanks so much, guys! :D

You should be able to see the article in the online edition and copy it for posterity. You'll have to register to have access to the full edition.

You can also call the B&N or Borders and ask them to hold a copy of the paper for you on Friday, or more if you want them. That way they may be able to order extra copies just for you.

Starbucks in Minneapolis/St. Paul

The Starbucks in MSP carry the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the New York Times. Always thought that was unusual but if we have it in Minnesota, the Starbucks in Denver probably carries it as well.

Trouble is that many times when we purchased the NY Times out of state, it was a reduced version--many less pages and sections that the full version sold in New York City.

If you have difficulty getting what you want locally, let me know and I'll be glad to purchase it for you here in NY and send it to you.

One of my friends recently sent me the following message. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but she usually sends very accurate info:

"One of the most interesting sites I have ever seen. Just put your mouse on a city anywhere in the world and the newspaper headlines pop up... Double click and the page gets larger.... I thought you all would like to know about this site, if you don't already. I also found you can read the entire paper on some if you click on the right place. You can spend forever here. Cut and paste the link below if you can not click on it".

Wow, Jennie - thanks so much for the newspaper link! It's great. Certainly a new junkie's dream.
