Airfare from our parts to anywhere warm is double to triple the price over spring break. Last year my wife's step brother was looking for a flight to FLL and it was over $2000!
I have no issues with waiting until after srping break and pulling the kids out of school for two weeks and then going to Florida. My reasons:
1. Low seniority at work, so I probably wouldn't get vacation over spring break anyways.
2. Easier to get trades with a two or three week window after spring break than just looking for one specific week.
3. The cost of flights. Spring break (with Westjet - not direct) is over $1200 per person return. Our trip is planned for April 21-May 5 and I found a deal out of Grand Forks ND (a two hour drive), direct for $2185 for four people, including a mid size SUV for two weeks. That includes bag fees, taxes, everything!
Even if I could, a spring break vacation would be too expensive for us to do every year. I would rather go to Florida for two weeks every year (non spring break) than once every two years (on spring break). Maybe my tune will change when the kids are older...
