What's with the holiday lights?

We still have people locally with their holiday lights lit up at night. North Jersey suburbs. I noticed this over the weekend as DH and I were out and about driving locally. At least a dozen houses still had their lights on.

Is this a new trend?? I really like the window candles but the rest of the lights seem weird this late..

Just curious.....:confused:
 
Ummmm... even tho we're not anywhere near you, that would be me...:eek:

In our defense, first of all, my DH takes a long time to get the reindeer properly lighting, and the lights up. More so this year as he went to all LED lighting and spent hours researching those w/out lead and picking out shapes and colors that my DD's could agree on. (!) Then finding and bidding on ebay and waiting for them to arrive. My requests were to try and keep them from getting too garish. Still, we ended up with pink stawberry lights at one level and white lights at another, with a tree wrapped in a strand of lights going about 30 feet up that changed from purple to blue to gold. Was actually less contrasting than it sounds.

Anyway, got them up late...then went on vacation over Christmas/New Year's and into first week of Jan.

Dad likes to see DD's happy and enjoying his work. So we kept them around and continue to turn them on at night. Then week-long storm w/power-outages, ice storm, trees down, etc. Much to clean up. Lights did come down from big tree, but others still there along w/reindeer. Sometimes they get turned on, especially if DD's will be coming home to a dark house. Other times they are not. They are a separate switch from garage lights, so it is a choice if they are on or not.. :D

Reindeer really should fly back to the North Pole, just have to do so when children not around and Dad is not working. (Requires some putting away that I guess I don't do "right") House lights will stay year round but not be turned on anymore until next season.

That's just our reasoning...don't know about anyone else:shrug:

It's not February yet, what's the problem??

seriously, we were never fast to put up or take down.

Neighbors across the way leave theirs up all year long and turn them on occasionally, like for parties. makes it easy for their guests to find the house in summer.
 
Those lights arent up late...they are 11 months early

Seriously...March was always my target
 
Last year we had so many storms and so much snow that it was impossible to dig out the lights until April I think. This year much better, we had the lights down by the second week in January. I don't mind seeing lights on the houses for however long my neighbors want to keep them up, but those deflated inflatable things just look sad laying on the lawns for months after Christmas. Sad, sad, sad.
 
Maybe some folks want to leave them up since this is the last year of the world !

I had actually thought about the Chinese new year. And I wasn't trying to pick on anyone--I was just wondering if maybe there was something going I didn't know about! :D

Nope, don't feel picked on, I've often wondered what other people must think when the reindeer are still eating my grass in the spring...;)

BTW - they are NOT inflatable! LOL - I always feel sad for those, too...

While we took everything else outside and inside down right after 12th Night, we left one small evergreen tree at the back of house next to our parking area lit with a strand of white lights. In the dead of winter, I often don't get home from my 45 minute commute until after it is dark. Leaving them up was my DH's way of "leaving a light on" for me.

We'll take them down in the next week or so, as it will soon be light again when I get home.
 
Shouldn't they at least stay up through the epiphany? Of course that was on January 6th. I know my fathers family always kept their Christmas Tree up until that date, they also never put it up until Christmas Eve.

It is one thing to keep the lights up, yet a totally different thing to keep turning them on.

I always keep mine lit until Epiphany, but I see so many houses go dark the night after Christmas. I think that is because the holiday has become so secular these days.

What ever happened to "trimming the Chrismas tree" on Christmas Eve? Now it's more like the day after Halloween! :eek:

Our tree goes up anytime between the day after Thanksgiving and the first week in December - so I guess it's anytime during Advent. The Baby Jesus doesn't go into the manger until Christmas Eve. (Although as kids, my siblings and I were absolutely blasphemous with our Mom's poor little Baby Jesus - we hid him all over the house and would scream from floor to floor, "BABY JESUS! YOU GET BACK HERE BABY JESUS, THIS ISN'T FUNNY! OH NO, BABY JESUS FELL IN THE TOILET!" It's really a wonder our mom didn't burn candles in the church every day for us.) The tree doesn't come down until after the Feast of the Epiphany, Jan 6th, which we always called Little Christmas.

Oh, my. I once left the Xmas lights and seasonal banner up and on for over 16+ months.:D

Yes, that was the house in NJ. No, the neighbors had the very good sense to NOT make a comment or to unplug the lights. Nor did the lawncare company. Nor anyone who came by. Nor any of my relatives. :wave:

Does it really matter?:shrug:

I've driven my sister home on Christmas night and I would guess half our neighbors have turned their lights off. But I guess you do get tired of it when you put them up and turn them on 11/1.

Growing up, we had to have all the stuff down on NYE, mom thought it was bad luck to still have the tree up on New Year's Day.
