I called Marriott yesterday to push back a HI reservation from June to October and discussed this point thread with the agent. He said that it should work and as the year goes on maybe Marriott will have other extensions to their policy but he also suggested depositing your points with II for a non-Marriott property. He indicated points in a holding account can't be deposited. Has anyone done that? What are the rules? Do you have to get them in there 60 days before they expire? Probably not a great value, but, it sounds like another option.
Last year I had some already banked points ( not in a holding account) that were expiring 12/31/19. I was not traveling before that date so most of the options listed under the “ explorer collection” in the points section on mvc wouldn’t work for me. My choices were to buy the insurance or to have MVC convert my points to a week and deposit it into II for exchange into a non Marriott. You choose his many points you want to use- there is a chart under the points section, interval international, on MVC. You can do this anytime before the points expire and the deposited week is unrestricted and good for 2 years. It does cost an exchange fee and it is possible to upsize by paying the fee. When I checked at the beginning of the year I could exchange into sheratons.

Thanks for the info. What is interesting if you read the interval world reference guide it leads you to believe the points will never expire:

"If it’s not available, no problem. Just place a request and let Interval do the searching for you. You’ll keep your points until a confirmation is issued, which is very likely: 97 percent of exchange requests placed by Interval members result in a confirmation.*"

*Source: Interval International’s 2013 Buyers’ Guide. In 2012, 952,834 exchanges were properly applied for and subsequently confirmed by Interval International. The confirmation rate on all exchange requests was 97.1 percent. This figure is a summary of the exchange requests entered with the exchange program and does not indicate a member’s probability of being confirmed to any specific choice or range of choices, since availability at individual locations may vary.

If you have MVC convert your points to a week and deposit into II it is good for 2 years- this is the way to extend your expiration.
If you use your points to exchange on II their expiration date remains unchanged. That is the link fasttr provided.

So did the trick work?

Well, it has not changed to 2021 yet, however, I got an email tonight that says they are changing it to 2021. So, to clarify, I had holding points just before the policy change expiring end of 2020, 60 days out. I made a reservation with those points recently (after the policy change), I cancelled it. The points changed to 120 days out, they still say end of this year, however, the email says they will change them to end of 2021.
