What the II Rep Told Me

I have had an Oceana Palms Easter week request in for my Canyon Villa's March 10, 2012 week for 6 mths. now. I also listed the CV week on Redweek with a high price just in case my trade wasn't going to come in until the last minute.

Well, I just rented the week for my price and called II to cancel the request first pending trade. The rep was very nice. I told her I thought the trade would come through, but I didn't want to wait until 1-2 mths. out because of airfare, etc. She was very nice and said that supposedly Marriott has gotten a lot of negative feedback from the owners (thru II as well) and that Marriott was going to release inventory earlier than they have been. She also agreed with me when I said "Well, Marriott is gonna do what Marriott thinks is good for them, so we'll see!"

Now I am going to rent an O.Pointe week for Easter and save a couple of bucks.

May I ask what you rented your week for?

Thanks,

As just a casual observation and without any proof. It seems to me that Marriott engages in inventory "dumps" at different times. The affect of that is to make people wait longer for getting their requests filled. It creates a shortage of available inventory at times.

It is a disadvantage to people with families who need air transportation at a reasonable price. They are afraid to purchase no refund tickets without a confirmation that their request first trade has been filled. If someone is using an award airline ticket the space may not be available when the trade can be confirmed.

All in all it has changed the nature of trading for some people. Especially, if the vacation is during peak times. You have to wonder how some of these "unintended consequences" help Marriott's brand image with their best customers. They were assured a better deal than the old weeks based system when they signed up. Owners who enrolled in the DC are subjected to the same II availability as anyone else. The "two bucket" approach just adds to the problem IMO.

My guess is that Marriott is adjusting how they deal with II (for the worse apparently), maybe as an incentive to get Marriott owners to join their vacation club (where I would assume, trade issues like this don't happen). I went to a presentation 3 months ago, that was all they talked about. I'm not a Marriott owner, but I'm guessing if I was, and I wasn't a member of the club, they'd look at you like you were a lepper (sp?).

If the 'release sooner' rumor is true, it could be that Marriott is past the surge of when the thought owners might convert, they figure whoever is left probably won't, and that they need to adjust things as to not p*ss them off.
