What is your wish list of places you want to visit?

This post is inspired by a reaction to a different thread.

I suspect most of us have some kind of wish list of places we would like to visit. I'm not thinking about places that have no realistic chance of happening, like a trip to the moon. Rather I'm thinking of places that aren't out of the realm of possibility, but that so far just haven't worked out due to logistics. But if things did work out, you would be on it instantly.

For me, there are four places that jump to mind immediately:

1. Turks and Caicos, (Dec - Mar)
2. Belize (Dec - Mar)
3. Tahiti (Nov - Mar)
4. Spain- La Rioja, Castile and Leon, and Galicia (Spring or Fall). With lots of time for wine-tasting.

The big difficulty for us is that DW is a school teacher and is also involved in a summer school program in which she is on faculty with a local university to provide continuing education courses for school teachers, so our vacation time is constrained to school breaks and August. That makes it difficult to get away for more than a week anytime except in August, and August is not when we want to go to the Caribbean or to Spain.

So that is my list of places I would love to visit, that aren't pure fantasy, but for which the logistics haven't presented themselves at present.

I have to go with 1. Alaska and 2. Tahiti. Both of them will happen sometime.
My son is thinking of relocating to Alaska and I know I'm still young enough to
make Tahiti happen.

I have an on-going list of places to go --- tops at the moment are:

1. Niagara Falls - I spent my summers in the Pacific Northwest as a child and driving the Columbia Gorge was always my favorite thing to do on vacation. I would love to see these falls - they look magnificent.

2. Australia = scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef has been a dream since I got certified in 1989.

3. Germany - I have never been there and I would love to see some of the Medieval towns and the Nurburing would be a high-spot for Ian;

4. The chateaux of France;

5. . Some where in the French part of Canada. I have only been to the western parts - which I love.

6. the safari part of Africa - whichever part is safe when we finally get around to going.

This year, I was able to mark off 2 of my top ten - (1) the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion; (2) Xi'an for the Terra Cotta Warriors. :whoopie:

And I removed Macchu Picchu and Santa Fe due to altitude sickness

Off the top of my head, at the moment:

Sub-Saharan Africa, Lake Victoria to the West Coast.

The Pantanal. The World's largest wetland, where Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia meet. Then proceed South to Mendoza Argentina for the wine.

Western China, Mongolia, S. Central Russia.

Scandanavia & St Petersburg.

The major problem is we keep going back to favorites. Cruises. Mexico. Italy, Greece, Spain (actually anywhere surrounding the Mediterranean). I'd still like to revisit VietNam/Cambodia- it wasn't cool 40some years ago, but I thought at the time that it was beautiful.

So far we take 5-6 trips a year, so we need to go to some of the more out-of-the-way ones to get them off the bucket list. As many here know I'm a retired trucker, and as such, have been to virtually every place in the USA where 2 lines on a map cross. Road trips have limited appeal, though we still take the 5th wheel out a few times each summer in the beautiful Northwest.

Why, oh why wasn't I born rich instead of so darn good lookin'.

One that I can't believe that I forgot - the train ride through the Copper Canyon (La Barranca del Cobre) in Chihuahua. One of the top train rides of the world, through a canyons that are deeper than the Grand Canyon. At the top of the canyon, near their continental divide, Mansión Tarahumara is a hotel that frequently shows up in the II directory short-term stays.

My dream is to catch the train and go to the top, spend about three nights there, soaking up the culture and doing day trips into the canyon. The canyon residents are largely indigenous people who still retain parts of their pre-Spanish conquest culture and language.

DW isn't as excited about this as I am, so I might wind up doing this with one of the kids.

When we retired 15 years ago I was concerned about what I would do with all the time. We wrote down 20 places to visit and completed the last one-Turkey about 4 years ago.Now we are forgetful seniors and must revisit many of the places we liked best.New ones are:
1. Sicily-plan to go in September
2. Canary Islands- Going right after Sicily
3. Egypt- Don't know when but we want a long Nile Cruise to avoid eating much ashore.
4. Possibly Peru
And here are the BACKTOOS

We took a Grand Circle trip to Copper Canyon and some side trips to see the Indians, their games, schools, and the women who sit outside the hotel weaving their baskets. This may not be the way you want to go, but it was the best for us. We had a 1st class train w/lunch and A/C. We went in May and it was dry and hot. I understand there are many waterfalls during the rainyseason. I found it interesting to see how the people live down there and to see the scenery. We always hoped to get back on our own, but withGerry gone now, I won't go alone. Do NOT take it off your bucket list.

I really have no must see places. Just kind of see them as we go. It isn't to say that there aren't places I would like to get to, but if I never make it to them, it would be okay. Here is my, rather short, list.

• Mediterranean Cruise

I wouldn't mind getting back to Paris, I only spent 6 hours in downtown Paris on an extended layover on may way to India.

I really have no desire to visit these places.

• Asia (though I would consider Thailand)
• Africa (the closest I will get is the Safari ride at WDW)
• An Alaskan Cruise
• Going back to India

This is where the big marlin live. I do have a timeshare in Cairns and Port Douglas. I think I could maybe trade into the Central America areas but would most likely use VRBO.

I used to live in Santa Fe when I was in my 20's and never had an issue, but with the altitude. I visited Bryce Canyon two summers ago (at 40 yrs old) and could barely breathe just walking around. I found out that fall that I was severely anemic. Just thought I'd let you know. You may want to have your blood checked to see if you are anemic. Machu Picchu is on my list, too, but now I wish I had gone 15 years ago!
