What is Preferred Check In at Marriott Cypress Harbor?

Hello,
I did a search and couldn’t find an answer to this. I received an email from about an upcoming stay at Cypress Harbor stating I was eligible for preferred check in? I’ve never heard of this. I didn’t book my stay with a Marriott week. It was booked with an independent. They don’t know I’m an owner. Is this another way to try to book an owners update?
Thanks!

I've never done this at Cypress Harbour, but have at Grande Vista. You really just check in with the "concierge" instead of the front desk. I don't know where they would do this at Cypress Harbour other than the small area off the lobby where they shuffle most guests anyway after they checkin at the front desk.

It will mainly be a push to get you to sign up for an owner update. BUT you will get to sit down for it instead of having to stand at the front desk. Perhaps they have beverages and snacks. Grande Vista offers, water, soda and wine...

The preferred checkin area is in a building near the Activity Center. Around to the left, after coming in the front gate. It's kinda of cramped, with a small waiting area with light refreshments, and then maybe 4 (6?) desks for individual checkin. And the main idea is to talk you into a presentation.

Can I just go to the regular check in?
Not sure. I know at Grande Vista they push you into the preferred checkin room. I suspect at Cypress Harbour the gate attendant directs you to the preferred checkin area when you give them your name. At Grande Vista they have people inside the lobby with clipboards asking for your name to direct you to the front desk or preferred checkin. That would be awkward at Cypress Harbour since it is a completely different building on the other side of the property. Not sure what would happen if you just went to the main lobby. You can always check in fairly early in the morning or later at night in hopes preferred checkin folks haven't got in or have gone home.

Surfwatch has the same thing as Grande Vista. In my case the guard gate told me I was going to preferred check in and gave me some kind of pass/ticket with my name written on it. The moment I walked into the lobby holding this, a person came over, took the pass and guided me down the hall to an area filled with chairs/sofas, snacks, beverages, etc and told me that my assigned person Brad (who called me in advance of my stay as well) was finishing up with someone else and to have a seat. I did witness someone in that area tell the attendant that they weren't feeling well and wanted to just get their keys and go lie down, and in that case they were led out to the front desk to check in. Time to feign illness! ;)

Yes they are just trying to get you to go to sales presentation. If you really don't want to go just tell them you are not interested unless they give you $1,000 which they won't. Don't budge. I'm guessing those people are paid at least $25 to $50 for each victim them sign up for the presentations.

I am there right now and they ushered me to preferred checkin. They checked a list when I told them my name at the gate and they told me I was to see “Suzy”.

Got to this separate building which looked and acted very much like a sales building. They schmoozed me a bit (those of you who have been to sales presentation know what I mean). The typical sales technique to try to make you comfortable.

Needless to say, after an extremely long drive the last thing I wanted to do was talk. I wanted to check into my room and collapse.

But no… the schmoozing with Suzy continued all innocent at first yet I knew the invitation to the owner update was coming. And yep. All this preferred check in is for is to get you gave to face with someone to get you to sign up for a sales presentation.

I was and still am not happy with this. If they do it again I’m gonna refuse and just go to regular checkin. Rant over.

When I first started hearing about preferred check in, I was a little enthusiastic about the prospect. In other systems I had used “elite” check in and it was just a shorter, faster line.

We used MVC’s preferred check in at Newport Coast Villas. All it amounted to was checking in at the concierge desk and getting the bite to attend an owner update. Rather than a quicker check in I felt it was slower. Our last three stays didn’t have “preferred” check in, and I am fine with that if all it does is slow me down, just so they can pitch the update.

Oddly enough I will walk over to the concierge desk for my parking pass and an extra couple of thousand BonVoy points. Go figure.

As someone else suggested just ask for $1,000 and not accept anything less. They will say they can't do that. Then say the discussion is over. They offered me $250 + $100 gift card for Charley's steakhouse. I countered with $300 + $100 Charley's and they said yes.

I prefer mobile check in.

I should’ve asked for more. I wonder how much more you could’v got out of them.
