What is difference between Paniolo Greens and SVC at Paniolo Greens?

As an exchanger, how would I notice a difference between Paniolo Greens and Shell Vacation Club at Paniolo Greens? Units are available in both categories. Are they in different sections of the resort? Different amenities? I have stayed at this resort before and like it, but last time there was only one choice of exchange, not two.
Any comments will be appreciated.

The short answer is that I believe there is no difference to the exchanger.

I own at PG. I'm an interval week owner. (I believe Shell is a corporation started at least in part by the original developer) Shell owns weeks just like me, and started a points club whereby they charge an annual membership. Unlike many clubs, one of the ways you can join is to turn over your deeded ownership to them. Being a points club you can vacation for a full week or just a partial week, besides other benefits.

I think they're listed separately because they can be traded into using points. Is your exchange a point system exchange? I think week based exchangers may not be offered the SVC option.

Don,
Thank you for the input. I saw SVC as an Extra Vacation -- probably because I have weeks not points. Just wondering!

I don't know this for sure but ... there may also be a difference in furnishings and amenities. Generally speaking ... Shell tends to put better quality furnishings/amenities in their units and renovates them more frequently. For example, at the Donatello in San Francisco, there are SVC units and non-SVC units. We have exchanged into both and found the SVC units to be slightly a notch above. Ditto for Mauna Loa Village in Kona on the Big Island. Some of the timeshare units are owned by Shell and some by Wyndham. There is a huge difference in furnishings and amenities (not necessarily one better than the other, but quite different). Hope this is helpful.

I'll be there next week!

Several months ago I reserved a l BR/2 directly with SVC for the week of March 12th. It's going to cost $560 with all taxes incl. I booked this as a back-up with the hopes that I would be able to get an Instant Exchange through RCI at the last minute. Well that hasn't happened thanks to all the changes RCI made in November. So I'll be at Paniolo Greens next week and I will see if I can find out what the difference is because I was confused about this as well. I had the option of booking through RCI as an Extra Vacation as well, but with SVC I could cancel up to 3 days prior but with RCI I couldn't. I'm happy to be going there at a very reasonable rate and I can save my Points for another vacation.

Wow. Where is your home club? I know Hawaii club is higher but I didn't think that much. A week would cost me $936. Also as far as I know you have to cancel 14 days prior to checkin to get your points back.

You are talking about shell vacation club, Correct?

You own SVC points and your home resort is PG, and a week would cost you $936 in m/f? Is that right?

I own Shell vacation club, hawaii club. Yes a week for the time period stated was I believe 4250. Works out to $936 (RCI & Club fee averaged in) through shell direct.

An exchange through RCI would be 4500 points plus the exchange fee. ($992 +179=$1171).

There are definitely better ways to use shell points

I'm not trying to make you feel badly- I just want to know if or what I'm missing here. I own an interval week at PG. My m'fs are I believe $677 per year. In order to join their club, SVC wanted me to sign over my deed, pay them a couple of grand for the transition, and pay over $900 a year in fees to basically have the flexibility for a vacation that starts and ends on any day of the week? OK I know they also said I could use the points to pay for my airfare etc- which I think I could get just a cheaply or maybe cheaper on my own.

Am I misiing something- I'm serious, I think I am missing something because there are a lot of people on this board who are much more TS savvy than me, but this doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Don, the cost of Shell Points is pretty high, but there are choices within the Shell system. I wouldn't use 4,250 Shell Points for a week at Paniolo Greens, because the exchanges through RCI are much less expensive for me. Using your own week is also less expensive for you.

We bought Shell for the California availability, specifically at San Francisco and Napa Valley. The inventory is plentiful, and our son and daughter-in-law have several friends and relatives who live in that area, plus they are big wine tasters. I personally love San Francisco and tire of trying to get a great exchange for dates I need in RCI. II is even more impossible.

You are not missing anything. If I ignore the club fee which includes the RCI membership it works out to $820 for the week but as I said, there are better ways to spend Shell points. I would not use them for airline tickets either - that doesn't make economical sense either.

Like Cindy, if I wanted PG I would trade through RCI one of my low maintenance fee weeks so total cost would be $500-600 for the week + exchange.

My use of the shell points is to use as fillers on Kauai - a few days on the front or back of my exchange week there (or both). I booked a 1 bedroom unit last year for a couple days on each end of my trip (stayed at the Westin in between) and since I was an owner was upgraded each time to a 2 bedroom unit. The points required to stay mid week are much lower that weekend and FF availabilty is better also. I bought enough points (they were literally giving them away on ebay - still are for that matter) so if I want to book an Oceanfront unit for a week stay, I can. I would only book a week stay at one of the resorts where an exchange would be unlikely. To get Oceanfront you really have to book at the 12 month mark - they seem to go fast at least at kauai beachboy

If you like PG, I would not upgrade to shell points

We bought a week (not Shell) and have also stayed there as exchangers and we can usually get the building we want. All the units have or are being redone, so I don't think there is any difference at all, unlike Donatello, these aren't different units, just different ownership on paper.

We're checking out of Paniolo Greens tomorrow so I thought I would update you on my stay. We did book a l bedroom (and I thought a 2 bathroom) on www.shellhospitality.com. I got such a good rate because it was a Cyber Monday special. The cancellation policy is 72 hours if you book through this site. On check-in I was offered an upgrade to a 2 bedroom for an additional $25/day. Since there are just 2 of us, I declined their offer. You are right, Don M, that they only have 2 bedroom units. So what they did was lock the door to the 2nd bedroom/2nd bathroom so that we could not use it. In our case we were assigned L209, which is actually a 2 BR unit with a den and 3 bathrooms. We only had access to the one bedroom and one bathroom. Our unit was very noisy at 6 in the morning because we were right beside the highway and liked to keep our window open at night since we didn't pay the extra $5/day air conditioning fee. I was told that there was no difference between Shell Hospitality and Shell Vacation Club (they are one and the same). Also, there is basically no difference in the furnishings in the units. Other than the noise issue, we have had a very nice week here. I'll write a full review in the next few days. If anyone has any questions, I will try to answer them.
