The evidence is pointing to a cyclical model. At the beginning of the cycle, rest mass exists as pure energy, then the higgs field gives elementary particles their mass, which forms the subatomic particles, then atoms. The universe expands until the higgs field collapses and creates a false vacuum, causing all matter to revert back to energy.

Once everything is in energy state, there is no particle vibration to create a clock. Massless energy can't create a clock. Without a clock, time no longer exists and spacetime conformally rescales to the "big bang" state of the next aeon, causing the next cycle.

At least that's the idea Penrose came up with....
