Well, I know you can use it.
If you decided to cancel the trip, should you rent it out cheap?
Or is that not allowed so you have to cancel with II or RCI?
I think if you cancel, you lose your exchange fee and trading power?
What have you done when you had to cancel?

Well, I know you can use it. Okay that's correct.

If you decided to cancel the trip, should you rent it out cheap? If you can rent it to a family member or someone you trust then you can rent it out.

Or is that not allowed so you have to cancel with II or RCI? You can cancel but your week loses significantly in trading power and you lose your exchange fees.

I think if you cancel, you lose your exchange fee and trading power? Hey didn't I just say that?

What have you done when you had to cancel? You can put it up on the last minute tug forum and get $700 for it. That's if the renter doesn't turn you in.

With II you can cancel, but you lose your exchange fee. They will give you a replacement week that is good for one year. How good the replacement week is will depend on when you cancel.

You could offer the week to family or friends. At the last minute you might want to offer it to a Tugger for free on the distress board. I would not offer it for rent (even $700 on the last minute rentals) on a public forum. You risk losing your II membership and the week will be forfeited if II catches you.

edited to add: hope you're not going to cancel this Hawaii trip you've been working so hard to line up!

The policy of the majors is:

An II exchange can only be gifted---no compensation whatsoever. Cancelling an initial exchange gives you a replacement week (with potentially degraded trade power) usable for one year from the date of cancellation. If you cancel within 59 days, you can only book within 59 days with the replacement week. If you cancel again, you lose the week.

An RCI exchange may be rented, but only for the cost of the exchange fee plus guest certificate. If cancelled, you get the original week back (likely with significantly degraded exchange power, as if you'd deposited it late) with its original travel window.

I've had two cancellations so far. One was an RCI week in Orlando where a later DVC exchange came through in II. The other was a week I booked for my brother as a gift, but his work schedule changed last minute. In both cases, I just cancelled and used the weeks for something else. But, they were also Wyndham generic points weeks, and those revert to their original trade power (because all generic weeks at a given point level have the same--lousy--trade power.)

Note that this is still a violation of RCI and II rules - it doesn't matter who you are renting to - if you get caught, you are in trouble.

This is a good way to get caught - if you are renting an exchange, don't advertise it on a public board!

FlyKaesan - see this sticky at the top of the board - Which exchange companies allow exchanges to be rented?

... snip ....
An II exchange can only be gifted---no compensation whatsoever.

Question --if someone is gifting me a week-- are there any issues to look out for ( like getting to the resort and they say - we don't know you - get lost!! )

What does a 'newbie' do to learn how to get smart on gifting &/or their pitfalls of 'looking a GIFT horse ...err... TS in the mouth '

Owned TS's but never became a member in II

Regards

Greg

The person who is gifting you the exchange should contact II, pay $39 for a guest certificate, and put the reservation in your name. You will want to have this Guest Certificate in-hand when you check in.
