We are looking to go at Lahaina from May 15 to 31 next year. I saw online that the whale season was ending in may. Do you know if we can see whale the 15 last days of may

thanks

May is very late for whales. I'm not saying they won't be there, but it's unusual. They say whale season is late December to early May, I've also seen January to early April. I know there are some years they've been sighted earlier than December and probably into May.

But to really answer your question. No one can predict for sure if you'll still see them end of May.

This is unrelated but last month, we spotted whales in Both San Francisco Coast (Lands End and Batteries to Bluffs) and Monterey Bay. We saw quite a few of them from the cliff at each site. Very pleasantly surprised...

Less than two weeks ago we were in Carmel, Ca (by Monterey Bay) and we saw several large pods of whales. Pods of perhaps 15 or 20. They apparently were feeding on large schools of mackerel or anchovies. Besides seeing the "spouts" or "blows" we saw some flukes. Very enjoyable

Mid-December through March is when you can be sure of seeing whales. A few years ago we saw over 200 whales (Including one full breach with the whale 100% out of the water) in one 2-hour cruise the first week of February. By May you would be very unlikely to see any. In fact, I don't think there are even any whale watching cruises in May. Pacific Whale Foundation cruises, for example, start on December 1 and end on April 30.

The El Nino may either make them leave early or stay later ... but I wouldn't count on seeing any in May. We are hoping that they are a little early this year and are around in early November.

If the whales get there much before December 1 or stay much past late April, there won't be many of them. It is "whale soup" at the height of the season.

GoHawaii dot com says the peak of whale watching season is between January and early April.

But I bet if you can find a tour in May then your chances of seeing a whale are still relatively high.

We go whale watching often when we go to Orange County, California. No matter the time of year you're often likely to see some kind of whale. Blue whale season is May through November. Gray Whales come by November through April.

The whales in Maui arrived early this year as this is what the locals told us because I mentioned how few we were seeing the first week of April. If they come early, they probably leave early too.

Lisa, we see blue whales practically all year round not far from the coast and one of the boat companies even guarantees all year that you will see them. We took a tour with them and saw three different species that day.

Not likely to find a tour then and not likely to see a whale if you could find a tour. And if you were lucky, it would just be one or two whales--not worth the price of a tour. That is why tours are not offered then.
