The luggage tags were the worst! David, please correct me if I don't have the story right:

Not too long after the Maui resorts opened, Starwood sent out leather and metal luggage tags (to WKORV-N/S owners?) with the company's logo.

Or maybe to Elite owners?

However, they were simply an advertisement for Starwood - there was no place on them to put your info. to ID your luggage.

They were just small Ads to hang on your luggage!

Yah, the story sounds about right.

But remember your personal level of importance is directly related to how many luggage tags you possess...

Is the point of the welcome gift just to get you to visit the concierge so that they can sign you up for a presentation?

I don't think so. The one time I got it I had a note saying Welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay. It was hand signed by the WSJ Manager.

I have actually seen these tags on luggage at OGG and WKORV
I do not recall where mine are (I got them for WKORV and WPORV) - probably in my vault with all my other important items... :D

...we leave the bags nowadays as Robin still uses the nice canvas one that we got in 2006 from WKORV.
Is that the lime-green and black one with the drawstring top? Isn't that just the best beach bag ever?

I had someone at Harborside coveting that bag last month.

No not really!! We have been fortunate enough to exchange into several Westin Resorts and each time we were given a gift from the concierge. All they said to us was thank you for being a Starwood Owner. However they did offer an owners update and we refused. That was the end of it. Gifts are simple bags for us exchangers but still a nice gesture.

I think gifts provided in Starwood system are variable and up to managers---We have often received gifts and other times received nothing

In Duluth Minnesota a Sheraton -I have stayed several times - they provided a gift each time for premium SPG members--last spring a pound of local roasted Coffee was given or a big Pint of local made Maple Syrup--I was given both and it was so great I thought I should re-book a few days later.

At Westin's some Hotels give gifts but--98% of Westin Hotels offer a free movie or 5,000 points SPG points--I think latitude is given to Hotel managers to decide. Concierge floor at Sheraton's vary as some have a huge meal and free Wine or beer and you need a Doggy Suitcase for leftovers and others offer only snacks without Wine or beer as compliments.

In last few years we swapped our Maui property for a less than 4 hour flight SVN place and over 40% of time- despite fact we are Platinum- we never receive anything as a gift. I get a perverse delight watching my wife get irritated with that. We have enough stuff at home and need to get rid of it.Getting more crap from Westin unless I can consume it is useless. However my wife will confront concierge who immediately coughs up a gift. I loved the luggage tags. I had my tags stolen at airport because they had quality---I would rather receive food or Coffee or something practical of quality than some cheap crap for a gift. However I do believe at some SVN properties gifts are provided as an enticement.

Don't complain about maintenance fees if you demand a gift when they try to sell timeshares as WE all agreed in writing Westin should be managers every year. When we ignore Proxy's and don't elect Tugg timeshare members who run and don't vote we have tacitly voted against them.

---Owners keep in mind Owner update gifts are written off as an expense against Hotel and if you think about it deep down - they should be charged against hotel. If you don't understand business or accounting you may be angered by my statement -- educate yourselves first--before responding.

For ourselves we would rather trade our Maui and go to close unique spots we haven't seen than a 14 hour flight to Maui. We skipped Maui this year and drove to Big Bend Texas from Minnesota via Moab Utah.. We had a blast We exchange 75% of our timeshares into Hotel points and find now that works best for us.

As to gifts at first we wanted them --we did receive wine at times but we find consumables or practical gifts work best

Regarding gifts or amenities, is there anything (at other properties) comparable to the welcome beverage you get when you arrive at the WSJ if you use the ferry? Which of course is very expensive :hysterical:

Just wondering...:ponder:

Did they start doing that again? I thought they stopped.
I loved those drinks - but back when ferry was $65RTpp.
Made even better with the free flavored Cruzan Rum upon arriving at STT.

When we ignore Proxy's and don't elect Tugg timeshare members who run and don't vote we have tacitly voted against them.

I have been involved in 2 Starwood elections and this is not how it works.

1. Starwood vets the applications and decides who they will allow on the ballot.

2. TUG members are only a small percentage of Starwood owners, and even if every single TUG member voted, is would be very unlikely for the resort to get a voting quorum. In fact, it's nearly impossible to get a voting quorum.

3. When there is no quorum, the sitting BOD, as advised by Starwood, chooses the the next officers.

4. In one election, in which TUG members participated very actively, the TUG candidate got the most votes, but there was no voting quorum, so the BOD chose 2 other people to fill the spots, and ignored the candidate that got the most votes.

In other words - it's fixed.

I didn't know they stopped. I got the free rum drink during my summer 2013 trip. Kids got it w/o rum. In that case, I am not doing the ferry again because it's a rip off.

Jus kidding, the car barge is the way to go.

We used to get welcome gifts when we checked into Vistana or the Villages. Little stuff like coffee mugs, bottle of wine, beach bag, etc. We haven't been there in years, so I don't know if they still do it. As I recall, we got that when we checked in at the Diamond Lane. When we stay at a hotel, we get a choice of StarPoints or a free drink coupon, a room upgrade, and they comp our parking.
