 Alright, I have to share.
I put in a request with II, using my HAB (Horizons Branson 2BR July 4th week), and wanted to get Key West for New Year's week. Well yesterday we got our confirmation to the Hyatt Beach Club! It was our 2nd choice of several properties. It took 3 weeks to get the confirmation. So... whatcha think ???
Now we are trying to get decent flights. It is MUCH cheaper to fly Monday to Monday (Miami), but then we'd miss a full day there because check-in is on Sunday. Also, car rental prices in Miami are TERRIBLE!
Tim

Congrats! That is sweet.

Try flying to Fort Lauderdale (FFL)and renting a car from there. It is a nice comfy airport that is an hour drive away from Miami.

You can also try PBI - Palm Beach. It does add to the driving but not so much to make it a huge problem.

Avoid Miami if possible. That airport is on the higher side of chaotic.

If you've never driven to Key West I recommend getting into South Florida by noon (or earlier) and taking your time on the drive. It's one of those drives thats worth it to be leisurely, especially if you have never done it before.

If you are into National Parks it is a great time to visit the Everglades. Winter is dry season. Less bugs and more birds.

I concur with FLL or PBI (never MIA). Both airports are minutes away from I-95 which is your route to the Florida Turnpike. Do not take I-95 all the way. You will regret it big time.

That's great. Congratulations. :)

I used to live in Miami when you could get a car for $110 a week...even on holidays. Now they cost more than hotels. Try vacationoutlet.com and book early. I book cars these days as early as possible. Flights to FLL are no better in price these days either. We just spend as much on flights to FLL for Thanksgiving as we have overseas. Also check priceline for a car last minute but have a backup reservation in hand with someone.
Tough times.

Thrifty and Dollar are still running Florida special rates. Check it out at Rental Car Momma.com. FYI - their prices change several times daily so it pays to check back often.

Congrats of your exchange!

I don't agree PBI is way too far and will add at least 1 1/2 hours to your trip to key west which is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours from Miami. Fort Lauderdale will add about 45 minutes. I don't like Miami International but I use it if I have to and this would certainly be the case here. In addition Car rentals out of PBI are much higher than Miami and cost of gas going to and from PBI is no longer small change.

Go with Miami on this one plus there are more flights to and from Miami and airfare is usually lower to Miami. Just my two cents but that's what I recommend.:cheer:

Too far is a relative determination. There are a lot of factors and it is hard to discount PBI as an alternative. I've flown into all three many times and I can tell you I have never seen lines at FLL or PBI that compete with MIA.

Normally I would go FLL, MIA, PBI in that order but I factor in car rental, ease of access, whether I like the airport and the time of the flights and cost of those.

In May I went through PBI due to flight cost benefit, car rental was a wash, PBI is an easier airport and the time of my flights were such that I'd still get into and out of the Keys when I wanted to.
