We own (paid in full) a timeshare at VDP in Puerto Vallarta. We have it till 2026 (30 year deal). We no longer want to pay the maintenance fees since our Cdn dollar is so low it's cheaper to just buy a one week All inclusive vacations instead.
We phoned them to tell them they can just have it back but they are saying we will have to pay the 2016 maintenance fee. Do we have to pay it since we are giving back a fully paid timeshare?
We've thought of selling it but really don't think we will get anything for it so just don't want it to not cost more then it already has.
thanks for any advice of the subject.

Actually, in the overall scheme of things, paying a year's MF to have the resort relieve you of further obligation is not bad. You won't have to find a buyer, negotiate a price and arrange transfer. I'd go for it. Many people pay thousands upfront only to find they bought in to a scam.

How about if you pay the 2016 MF and deposit the 2016 week in Interval or RCI, and THEN have them cancel your contract? Better to get an exchange out of your 2016 week/MF's than nothing at all.

If you can get something in writing from them that they will accept it back with the 2016 MF paid, that is indeed not a bad deal at all. Just make sure the terms of the agreement, including who pays any sort of transfer fee, is clear prior to sending them any money.

When a resort takes a unit back there may be a transfer fee. I had to pay DRI $250 when they took my unit back.
See what the transfer fee is and that could help you weigh giving it away vs giving back to the resort. The UVC transfer used to be $250 but I have heard that it may now be higher. I forgot to ask when I did my owner update 2 weeks ago. What type of membership do you have? Fixed vs floating, premier, gold, or points? A summer week may be more difficult to find a taker.
Resorts are under no obligation to take back your unit/membership so a maintenance fee is really no too bad if you want no hassle. Good luck!

Get details of total you have to pay to get rid of Week in writing (an email is ok). If there is something in addition to the 2016 MF, pay the total (MF + Extra) in one transaction. This way you will have a record of total they asked for and your payment of same.

id also agree that 1 years MF paid directly to the HOA (assuming they arent something ridiculous) is a deal id certainly consider if the process was quick and painless.

I was at VDP in PV in March 2015. It was a wonderful place. I imagine that if you listed your week for sale on TUG someone would snatch it up! Or - rent your week to someone else. What is the week and MF?
