Haven't done it myself but my brother uses a sheetrock-like lining paper which goes on like wallpaper and then the seams are taped and mudded just like regular sheetrock. But it's cheaper and easier then removing/replacing the actual sheetrock.

This sounds perfect! Where did he get it?

I've fauxed many a room but I don't want to do that in this room. I'd thought about Venetian Plaster but the designer I am working with says they've had problems with it.

The wallpaper/painter guy is coming over this afternoon to look at the walls and see what needs to be done. We shall know soon and I will keep you posted as I'm certain this is keeping you up nights worrying. ;)

The interior designer showed me a couple of papers this morning, both aqua, and I chose one that looks somewhat damaskey. It is very soft-looking and I love the color. Then he showed me the colors for the shutters and the bookcases. It is going to be lovely. I am so happy. He also showed me a red alligator upholstered chair that I liked but not quite. I don't think I want red even though I am usually very drawn to that color. We looked at some softer purple hues and I may go with those. Not sure.

For me, this sounds like a better option with a near-guarantee on results. Less mess, less cost (I think???).

I just added thin board in my bedroom closet over old cedar. It also has a window. Removing moulding, light switch covers, etc., was a somewhat delicate process, but it wasn't problematic.

Sorry, but I had to laugh over this one. Someday, probably far into the future, someone is going to discover that cedar wall and ask "who ever was dumb enough to cover up that beautiful wall".

The Expert's Verdict

"Oh, my! You do have some serious damage."

But, he knew just what to do. He said he would put an oil-based primer (Kilz) to seal in the paper and then he could repair over that. The paper has to be sealed because you can't glue anything to it. And you can't use anything water-based without damaging the paper further.

I had wondered about spraying it with an oil based primer/paint but DH said NO. I now feel vindicated. Yes! I actually had the right idea. :D

I am feeling much better now. Moving forward again. Such a relief. (of course, I haven't received the bid yet  )

Thank you!

Still trying to decide on the red alligator chair, though.

The green alligators are scary enough, I'd run even faster if I saw a red one!

(And I wouldn't want either - real or fake - on my chair)

I'm sure it isn't real alligator-- or crocodile. I can't tell the difference. I must have reptile prosopagnosia. I actually liked the faux leather but not the shape of the back of the chair. It was too sharply square.
