We'd like to visit China in the coming year and heard you need a VISA for entry into China. How do we go about getting a tourist VISA?

You need to send your passport to the Chinese Consulate in DC, if i remember correctly. It's a weird process. I would go here for more info.

Remember, don't take anything into China that the Communist government might deem inappropriate. This includes things like the Bible, some DVDs, any political files on your laptop, etc.... It can cause big delays at the airport when you land!

Thanks! You guys are the best! That's just the info I need. I had no idea where to start on a VISA for China.

My husband mentioned needing a VISA and I said I'd post a question on TUG. He said I bet you'll have an answer in 15 minutes.

Richards answered in 10 minutes and John in 11 minutes. Two answers (with great info) in less than 15 minutes!
Thanks!!

If there is a chinese travel agency near you, you can call them and see whether they will process the visas for you (including dropoff and pickup the passports/visas at the embassy) for a fee. At chicago, this service costs about $15 per person but save the trip to downtown twice.
