Our room was ready yesterday at the Grande Ocean after 4:30. I can understand a help issue at times but when they tell you they accommodated too many late CHECKOUTS that made them late getting people in there villas is unacceptable. I should not be inconvenienced at the gain of someone else. If I wouldn’t have expressed my displeasure when trying to checkin at 4:00 she originally said it would be 5:00 or after. I guess somebody got the later cleanup. As an owner I will complain that one shouldn’t be inconvenienced to benefit someone else.

I would agree that providing a service to one owner at the cost of another owner is not the correct thing to do. If late check out is not available due to arriving guests it should not be extended. If Marriott plans to extend this benefit, then it is up to Marriott to provide enough housekeeping employee's so as to have the unit ready on time for the arriving guests.

Someone has to pay for the benefit of late check outs. I do not want to be that person.

Completely agree. Having said that, I don't recall ever getting more than an hour longer for check out at any of the Marriott properties. In Aruba, I don't think I've had my request for a late check out granted even once. I don't get the impression that Marriott hands them out liberally so it's surprising that housekeeping can't keep up.

I've only inquired about late check out once, and that was at Waiohai. They checked and we were told that the villa's with our view were 100% booked for that day and it would not be possible.

I would imagine this would be up to the individual resort manager as to how they should accomadate late check out requests. I doubt this is a system wide issue. If it becomes one I'm sure the front desk will hear about it. It's unforunate that those who will hear about it usually are not the ones making the decisions.

I will never understand the concept of asking for a late checkout, if you know you can't get out on time, leave the night before or book an extra day if possible. We have only asked for a late checkout once and that was at a Comfort Inn in Newport, RI. We had gotten stuck in major traffic and had a whole host of delays and did not get to the hotel until 5 am. If they had said no, that would have been fine also. We would have dealt with it.

We did received compensation for a delayed check in once from Disneys Saratoga Springs, but that was because they told us our room was ready. We got to the room and had half of the stuff alreay out of the car, only to find the previous occupants still in it. They actually yelled at us for making noise at the door because a baby was sleeping. This was at 2 in the afternoon. The occupants were nasty and said they were not leaving the room until after nap time. We rec'd a voucher for $100 towards a meal at the onsite table service which ended up costing us an additional $50 for our party of 6. Plus the meal wasn't that great.

Otherwise we have had very good luck getting in before scheduled check in times. If a room isn't ready we just head to the pool.

Honestly, stuff happens. Should we always expect and/or demand compensation for the occasional minor inconvenience? Have we become that sort of society?

My thoughts exactly. I had an issue the other day at one of the fast food restaurant drive-ins. I had to go inside to straighten it out. They offered to give me my money back plus my order. I declined. Told them that I wasn't after their money and that all I wanted was for the order to be straightened out.

It wasn't a timeshare but years ago we were at a Holiday Inn in Baltimore. Checkin was at sometime in the early afternoon but we were taking a redeye landing at 6 in the morning. I knew DH would not sleep on the plane and would not be able to wait that long to sleep. So I booked the room the night before and advised we would be checking in very late/early the next morning. We arrived and they advised even though we checked in at 7AM they would not charge for the prior day, and they hoped we got a nice rest. I was happy because it was a work related trip and not being paid for by my employer. :)

We always arrive early at our Marriott timeshares, but never have had to wait past 4 and frequently have been checked in early. At Hanalei Bay they call the owners and ask them what time their flights arrive so they can try to have the unit ready when you get there. Nice touch!

I certainly don't see it as a right but I do understand the concept. In some cases the only flight option (practically or economically) is an afternoon departure (no matter what day you fly) in which case it's nice to have a few more hours with your own room. I certainly never think it should be at the expense of incoming guests but, if the room's available, why not?

The only reason for asking for a late check out was that most flights leave Hawaii in the evening. We were on an exchange and did not have the option to book and extra night and, it made little sense to us to reserve a hotel and move from the TS to hotel room for a few hours. We knew we could leave the luggage with the bellman and that's what was done.

We will be staying in Maui using another timeshare system that allows individual nights to be booked and, for that stay, I will book 8 nights so long as it's available. In watching inventory booking 8 nights shouldn't be a problem.

In the past 4 years we have twice arrived (at Oceanwatch) maybe an hour early and not had to wait for our room. The other two years we arrived maybe an hour after checkin, and not had to wait. We check-in 3 weeks today.....and I know I have likely "jinxed" myself !

Haven't been to Hawaii (or even the west coast recently), but I think even I would have a hard time checking out the night before, just to avoid the check out time. :)

I believe most Marriott timeshares have a checkin of 4pm. When the villa isn't ready by 4pm (or shortly thereafter) does the timeshare owe you anything?

You've got to be kidding! A few minutes maybe an hour past 4 & you expect compensation? Here's ten cents
That's what it worth. Go enjoy a hard candy & get real.

All of the timeshares and hotels I have stayed in in Hawaii have offered courtesy areas to shower and get ready at the end of the last day after checkout. It is a bit of a hassle to check your luggage with the bell station and then retrieve it to get back to the airport, but it is worth it to me to fully enjoy my last day on Hawaii. If I booked an 8 night stay and checked out on the last evening to have the convenience of using the room throughout my stay I would still feel cheated because I should have stayed that next day. I know it doesn't make sense but I find it so hard to leave anyway that that would make it even harder.

I certainly understand that feeling. It's just easier for us to not feel rushed and be able to relax and leave at our own convenience.

We're fortunate (or unfortunate depending on if the MF's are due) to own enough that we can burn an extra day here and there. We look at it as a luxury, much like airline lounges for their upper tier FF's. We take enough trips it doesn't usually bother us to go home. The next trip is just a few weeks away. If we were only taking 2, 3, or 4 trips per year, I'm sure I'd be singing a different tune. If it were only one vacation/year you'd never get me to leave if I had an extra night to spend.

I think this happens quite often when resorts are busy. Has happened to me twice at Grande Vista (I'm an owner). One time, we couldn't even get an estimate when room might be ready. We said we'd go shopping but didn't want food to get hot in the car if room wasn't ready when we got back. They said they'd call, as I remember, so we went to dinner then shopping then room was ready (after 6 or 7, as I remember it). Resort was packed.
Some of us habitually check out early, by the way, leaving housekeeping with hours of extra time. We always leave Hilton Head at 5 AM to drive home (and call front desk to tell them). Almost never stay until 10. I can't imagine we are the only ones.
Comment about Hawaii late check-out is correct---most flights leave late (dinner time or later). I know Maui and KoOlina make provisions for this, but I'm sure many hang out in room until 10 because of this.

With Starwood's Westin Mission Hills, I was comp'ed $100 without asking for any compensation when the room was not ready. Then there were more problems, they topped up with another $50, then there was another problem with the room, another $100. By end of the week I had a credit of $250 on my bill, all without asking for any compensation. We also got a bottle of wine from the manager delivered to our room for the issues that we encountered. They definitely went over and beyond to make things right.
