You are most likely stuck with whatever contract your dad has unless you upgrade to something else. The contracts specifically state that you have 5 days to rescind. If you do not do that, it is yours for 10 years.
I am sorry this has happened, but being a long time owner, I learned not to buy anything that was not ready to occupy today! Actually, that is how we got into Vidanta (Vidafel in 1999). We had exchanged into a dump in Acapulco using our Hawaii timeshare. We took the tour for something to do and liked the resort. They said if we bought, we could move in that day at a prorated fee for the remaining days of that week. We signed on the dotted line, put the payment on our credit card, and took a taxi to the dump, had the driver wait and grabbed our stuff and went to the MP in Acapulco for 4-1/2 amazing days!
You should try some of the other levels until you find what you like best. I have 2 GL weeks each year, and will be there next week, but if I want to go for 2 weeks, I would choose Grand Bliss. It is laid out a little differently than Grand Mayan. I was opposed the GB originally because it has 2 under counter refrigerators, but we worked that out using one for food and one for beverages. I do like the GB decks better - especially that big round reading chair/loveseat.
I do not plan to do any upgrades in the future as my son & his family do not like the huge resort thing. They like my Buganvilias because it is smaller and they can walk to restaurants and town. We take taxis too when in PV, but we like to explore. My son has been renting condos in PV to coincide with my vacation. When my Buganvilias contract expires at the end of 2026, we will go somewhere else for Thanksgiving. I will still use my Vidanta for trips with friends who like the resort experience.
I do not feel that I have been ripped off by Vidanta. We originally bought in February 1999 and have been intentional about upgrades. We bought quite a few weeks in the early 2000's on eBay for very low prices. We were able to leverage those to get 2 GM Master Suites and still had 4 MP weeks. Having the no pay unless you go and the Sr. Certificates added for free in 2007, made it a no-brainer to keep what we had until we decided to trade them all in for two 2bedroom GL units with all the bells and whistles. We had figured up how much all of our renovation fees would be until the end of all the contracts and then paid that much to get the 2-GL 2-bdr units with 4additional Residence weeks. Now that it has been 10 years, I paid the renewal fee and just have the 4 Residence weeks. I can use 2 of them for no usage fees each year. If I want to use the other 2 weeks, I have to pay the usage fee. If I can go until the end of 2033, I will have broken even on how much we paid Vidanta for our "Ownership" for the original contract and any upgrades over the years. Maintenance/Usage Fees are not included in what we paid as those would be like going to a hotel and paying the weekly fee.,
