I have Meniere's which is characterized in part by severe vertigo attacks. There are a number of antivert drugs. I assume the ER has tried more than one?

Meniere's has recently been linked to herpes and many people have had relief from Valtrex. Most MDs don't know this and don't try this as an option.

I hope he feels better soon! Vertigo is horrible.

Sorry he's not feeling well

My daughter has it and was bedridden for a few weeks. The meds don't help. She had her ears"balanced" but I am not sure exactly what that means. They did something to rearrange the fluid in her ears. She is still not 100%.

The rx they gave him was for meclizine 25 mg. Yesterday it seemed to do okay by him but today he is like a drunken soldier. He also takes fexofenodrine which is also an antihistamine....could he be overdosing on antihistamine? Our dr said the only other thing he could give him is valium, but that would make him ultra sleepy...oh good! a sleepy dizzy guy??? I said no thanks. Any ideas?

Take him to an ENT

This could be the result of a piece of inner ear calculus that has broken off and lodged in an area that triggers this feeling of dizziness. This is much more common than people think and is one of the first things they look at for middle-aged to older folks who present with sudden, gut-wrenching nausea.

There is a cool procedure that they do - you will swear that the ENT is just throwing you around but it is a very specific procedure and the purpose is to dislodge the debris and let it "relodge" in a harmless place. It is supposed to work 95+% of the time although recovery can take a few days.

Good luck!

And they give exercises at home to dislodge the particle. Tilting head, etc. Works for some people. Hope it all goes away for him fast.

My bout with it came and went mysteriously...

I had vertigo come on suddenly at the end of June this year. I had a miserable summer dealing with it. I went to urgent care and they thought it was fluid in my inner ear. Told me to take Mucinex. I took that for over a month and finally stopped when it wasn't making a difference. I was finally going to make another appointment about two weeks ago with my family doctor and voila...it went away as mysteriously (and as quickly) as it came.

My sister thinks I had the tiny particle another poster referred to that had shifted in my ear and was pressing against one of the little hairs we have in our ears. Apparently this can cause the dizziness. The first doctor offered to give me the vertigo meds but I was teaching summer school and didn't want the tiredness she told me I would experience with them.

My sister experienced vertigo similar to mine beginning a little before mine. Her family doctor sent her to an eye specialist and she had eye exercises to do. I can't remember the whole explanation, but her vertigo cleared up also.

Good luck getting to the bottom of it with your husband. Maybe his will go away all of a sudden like mine did.

Your husband needs to see an otolaryngologist (ENT) now! Most GP's and ER physicians do not know how to evaluate or treat dizziness.

I had it about five years ago to the point that I too eneded up in the emergency room. I also was given meclizine, and it DID help. Mainly it was just time that helped me most. Slowly got better every day for about two weeks. It was scary at first, but once I knew what it was, I was no longer as scared of it.

Each time I get a really bad head cold or even severe allergies that result in very heavy nasal drainage, Vertigo is a possibility about 10 days later. I have come to treat these sinus related issues much more readily in order to prevent this. The Vertigo really is something that has not been a big issue since the original episode.

Tell DH he'll be fine. Just don't drive while taking the meclizine. :)

I have menieres disease and have had it for many years. A good ENT is critical. What you do not want to do is jump to any concluisions about it being menieres or any other specific diseases. There are many things that can cause vertigo and I know from experience that vertigo is no fun. As far as taking valium, keep in mind that in small doses, it can be very helpful. In addition, it is one of the most prescribed medications in the country. At low doses, it may have no effect at all in making him sleepy. I have taken both meclizine and valium and meclizine makes me much more tired.

Bottom line, get him to an ENT and find one who is well known for balance and dizziness. Most of the major medical schools have balance and dizziness centers that can help with this.

Good luck and God Bless,

BigTom

I had the same thing several months ago. I used Flonase and Meclizine which seemed to do the trick.

Thanks Tuggers for the advice. Took DH to ENT today and he will go to Savannah next week for further testing to determine the type of Vertigo he has. Once again Tuggers came through for us. Love you all! :cheer: :whoopie:

I went to three different specialists for this problem. Two said I had menieres and one said I had a virus that affected my balance. It has been 1.5 years later and I would say the one who said it was a virus was right. Vertigo is very hard to figure out and absolutely stinks! I now jog 3 miles three times a week and still have slight feeling of imbalance issues. I really thought I was going to be disabled, according to the first two Drs. Please get a great specialist. This can really drive a person nuts!

My husband had this last Thanksgiving. He was feeling a little dizzy and tired but it was Thanksgiving and he had been cooking and entertaining so he went to sleep early. Woke up in the middle of the night, room spinning. Couldn't walk very well. Went to ER and they ran cardiac tests then finally gave him mezcaline to keep him from throwing up. Weaned him off a couple of days later but the darn thing hung on for weeks. Slowly it diminished on it's own. By the end of the month he was pretty much cleared. He says he thinks it was a virus. By the second month he was back to girl watching! Some people have it for years and have to learn to manage it. Good luck!

Hi All, I said in an earlier post that we would go to Savannah next week for further test but after reading what the test involved and the procedure after the test to relieve the problem, he has decided to take a wait and see attitude. Will let you all know how this works...always can do the test and procedure if all else fails. No one ever said getting old is easy but they never talked about dizzy, etc.
