Venting - Noisy People Upstairs in TS

the problem is that the next occupants could be loud also. I think the resort should have had the guts to keep them quiet in the first place.

I really agree with this post. What happens if one of the couple in the downstairs unit cannot walk stairs - do they always have to put up with noise?

I am a very light sleeper, so noise does matter to me. We have been very fortunate in timeshares, at Welk, we own in the older resort, so the sound proofing is done for real houses and is great. (Well, I guess we did own there, we switched to points). I like the ground floor, but I think with this in mind, we will always request the top floor.

At Wyndham Skyline Towers 2 weeks ago, I was awaken at 2AM from a dead sleep. There was some noise coming from the unit above me. This is a concrete floor building - not cheap plywood. And I was awaken sharply, not a slow, what is that noise, do I hear a noise, etc. I called the front desk and 5 minutes later, it was quiet again. And I fell back to sleep soundly.

The next night at 12:20AM, I was awaken slowly with the what is that noise, where is it coming from, who is beating on that door in the hallway, are they beating on my door, yes that is my door. I got up and found security beating on my door as I peeped thru the peep hole. Asked him thru the door, what did he want? "Noise complaint". Told him that was last night that I had called and why would it take him 24 hours to answer that. He told me "No, the complaint was that I was making the noise". Told him I was dead asleep w/o any TVs on and why would he beat on my door for over 5 minutes when he could not have heard anything noise coming from my unit. Told me to keep it quiet. I called the front desk! Told me to talk to the supervisor after 3PM.

Got $24 of free parking and 2 bottles of wine (one red and one white). Too bad they didn't have caller id on who complain about my sleeping.

Just a thought, maybe the people you complained about decided to play a dirty trick? Glad they compensated you!

That was the jist of my compaint to the front desk supervisor. Retaillation for my complaint and a poorly trained security guard - he most likely woke everyone on my end of the hall with his knocking that long on my door and his answering my questions.

??? No, I really think they had active kids. The kids were an annoyance, though Laura does put in perspective that happy kids is a good thing. The real problem here was the parents' belligerent attitude, instead of "I'm sorry, we'll try to get them to walk inside and have them bounce the bball outside."

Anyway, we packed up and trundled our stuff to an upstairs unit in the next building. It was a minor inconvenience, but has made us even more appreciative of tonight's nice fire and quiet evening. It also was a good reminder to take off our shoes and walk carefully in consideration of those below :)

I was responding to vacationhopeful's post - the one right about mine. (#28) :)

If all else fails....

You could call them at all hours of the night.

IE: 1AM, 1:30AM, 2AM, etc. etc. :D

Or turn on the volume of your TV or Radio L-O-U-D at 4AM

PS: I don't get Mad... I get even !!!

Most of the time, this usually takes care of the problem for me...

lolololol

Good stuff! That seems to have worked for me in that past many times! Usually in hotels while working, because TS people are so much more considerate.... or not....

BANG---- BANG!!!!!

Tough call - I agree with both camps. If there's an upstairs, there will be some noise. That said, I think it's absolutely the responsiblity of the parent to keep the kids reasonably quiet. Reasonably does not preclude a child from waking up at 6 am and padding to the bathroom. Those little footsteps WILL bother some people - too bad. But the kids should not run around the condo past 8 pm or earlier than 9am (or so). Probably they shouldn't be running period- let's go outside and play - but I wouldn't be all over my kids during those times.

I'm lucky - my kids sleep in. They do stay up late, but they're TV and game system late-nighters. SIGH. Good for vacation, a battle during school days.

Kids being kids

Kids being kids is fine during the right time frame and to a certain level. When you pass that time or level things need to change.
We have a son and daughter both older now but when small we were very careful and their noise level and started watching this at a very early age.
We started timesharing when my daughter was 6 and my son a newborn. We always let them know the rules and when things were fine to do and not fine to do. It is called parenting. Some people can and some can't. Those that can't need to be dealt with.
We experienced the noise all night for 2 nights at one place before we finally had enough. We had talked to the upstairs people and finally went to the front desk. Police were called in and it finally stopped. It turned out that 3 families were in 1 two-bedroom timeshare with 8 kids and each night the parents went out and left the kids.
Every case is different but if the parents can't parent then someone needs to step in.

At my home unit in aruba, the sleep 4 unit next door had 2 adults and at least 3 preteen young men. In addition to the normal running, yelling, fighting noises their daily routine was to set the fire alarm off by holding a lighter under it. Several times a day they would pound on our door and run away, my wife caught them and told them not to do it again, they told her (use your imagination). That was the final straw, our complaint was added to the list of others and they were tossed out the 3rd day. Kudos to the resort for actually doing something rather than lip service.

On one of our vacations, the people who had the studio next to our 1 bdrm, arrived in the middle of the night and proceeded to do about 3 loads of laundry. It was very hard to sleep.

In that case, I would have done our laundry around 5AM. :D

Can't speak for other jurisdictions, but, after the NCV rooms manager came and listened to the ruckus above our unit in the old 2400 building, he unfortunately couldn't do anything other than move us. Since the occupant above was an owner, he said the only thing we could do was call the police and swear out a disturbing the peace warrant. Evidently, the Newport Beach police take such complaints seriously. If the occupants were renters or exchangers, he had more power to intervene or have them removed from the premises.

I wrote about it here on TUG back in 2004. As DaveM mentioned, after that experience, we always requested and received (I reminded them of our experience every time) a top floor unit.

The unit had 12 people in it, 8 of which were minors. I love kids, but not that much :)

So, when in doubt, call the police :)

laundry in the middle of the night? Three families and 8 kids? Fire alarms and unprintable comments? Police?

I guess those examples put a couple of active little kids in perspective! Actually the kids weren't the real problem, as pointed out by many of you it was the parents.

The second half of our week in our upstairs unit - which we will always ask for on future exchanges - were pleasant, relaxing, and quiet. I didn't hear any complaints (or brooms from below :) ) so I hope the people below us were as happy as we were.

Whenever possible.....
we vacation when school is in session. :D

That is my solution as well. But I do still see school aged children (mind you much, much less) around for a week when I am at a family type resort or hotel during school season. I wish my parents had been that cool!

That's one of the reasons I decided to book Casa Velas Boutique (adults only) for 2010. No rugrats allowed! Now THAT is a vacation!

Don't you just love it when the people in the unit above you come back about midnight to 1:00 AM and fire up the Jaccuzi? Or how about when your headboard is up against the common wall with the neighbor's headboard, they come back to their unit about 1:00 to 2:00 AM every night, and then you get to be entertained by their headboard banging against the wall. We finally figured, what the heck, right back atch ya!;)

I don't understand the "request an upper floor unit." When I get RCI exchanges, I am assigned a specific unit, and generally that stays the one I get on check-in.
We have as much trouble with bands and partying to 11-midnight as the sometimes rowdy kids, or talking grownups outside a window, etc. Timeshare noise seems the same as hotel noise to me.

Funny.... I'm always worried about my kids making too much noise when we are in an upstairs unit. It stresses me out too.

Anyways... we were camping once and these kids next to us were playing music until 3 am. Between midnight and 3 am everybody and their brother went over to tell them to shut up but they wouldn't. They would turn down the music and then, a minute later it would be loud. It was rough. My dd who was 2 at the time slept through the entire event but woke us up at 7 am. So, as pay back I blasted my Barney music at 7 am. I actually went to my car and turned the Bose Stereo on really loud. I got a round of applause from the other campers. Those campers were really pissed. Now, in hindsight I probably shouldn't have done that because you really never know how people are going to act.

Good For You !!!
The other campers should have also done the same thing.

In hindsight, the idiot kids shouldn't have played their radios that late.
They didn't know how you were going to react.
