Looking to do Red Rock Canyon Tour and Valley of Fire. I can't see where the 2 are combined. The Gr. Canyon is probably out, since we don't have the time and I can't see sitting on a bus for about 5 hrs one way.

Looking at the prices of the Red Rock or Valley of Fire, I'm thinking it would be cheaper for us to rent a car for the day and do the trip ourself.

Does that seem to be a better choice? There would be 4 adults and 1 child.

We did the tour for Red Rock ourselves about a year ago with the rental car. I think it may be a better idea so you are going at your own pace. I think we paid $5.00 for the car to enter.

How long did the trip take you? Just looking now, in case little one gets bored.

May not even have time since the girls will only be in Vegas 3 full days. Just doing the strip will probably take up all their time. A show or 2 , plus the freebies.

Yes, rent a car and drive yourself. Depending on where you start it's not more than 30 min. to get to Red Rock and you could drive the loop in less than an hour. If you wanted to do some hikes, then it would take longer.

If you have the car for a day, do Red Rock early in the day and then drive over to the Hoover Dam. It's an amazing sight to see and is about 30 min. to get there, too. Have lunch somewhere along the way and you can easily be back to the Strip in the late afternoon.

Been to both Red Rock and V of F. They are worth the time. Valley of Fire road is not the best and I would recommend an SUV as a minimum.

Also, a trip to Mt. Charleston is about 45 minutes from the Strip. A good place for lunch is a lodge located near the end of the road. You can't miss it even with no directions. Dining is both inside and outside. Reasonable prices. It's about 20+ degrees cooler there in the warm weather and can be a welcome relief.

There is also a national recreation area at Lake Mead. You can take in Hoover Dam and then take a two hour boat ride on the lake. If you have a national park card there is no charge to get in but there is a charge for the boat ride.

Thanks for the infol. I wasn't planning on an suv, just an impala. Something comfortable for the 5 of us.

I did mapquest starting in Vegas from the Wyndam GD condo, to Valley of Fire, Boulder Dam, by Lake Mead, stop at Ethel's Candy Factory , then on to Red Rock Canyon and back to the condo. A total of 3 1/ 2 hr drive.

I think we can manage that in 1 day if we leave by 8 or 9am and be back by 7pm.

This would also be educational for the gr.d. Vegas itself can be. Replicas of Paris, Venice, Egypt, NY all in one place.

Our school doesnt have spring break, so she would be out 4 days. She has missed time before.....2 trips to WDW in May, a trip to OR to see Aunt in April, and Disney Cruise right after Christmas Vacation.

Plus her summer trips. A traveler for her age!!!!

An SUV because of the road or weather. Weather in that area in February should be ok?

Besides DH and I will be there 3 days prior to the girls arriving, so a break from the strip will do us good. Of course, with gr.d , it may be cheaper to gamble.

The Valley of Fire road is a little rough once you get off of the blacktop. However, the picutures are the best when you get down to a closer view so it's worth venturing into it. The road is unimproved with several potholes though it is very safe to drive. Therefore, an SUV is a wise choice. You won't need a four wheel drive but you do need clearance under the car. Red Rock Canyon is no problem.

The weather in February can be windy and cold. While some rain can occur there are dust and sand storms that are more likely. A nice day is usually sunny and 65-70 degrees. Las Vegas is in the high desert and subject to colder weather than one would ordinarily associate with a desert location.

I have done both and would not try to do VOF & RR in one day. We spent one full day at VOF and didn't get to see it all!! It is amazing and worth the time to stop and smell the roses. The suggestion of RR & Hoover Dam is very doable IMO . Have a great time. shaggy

We are going in February and are renting a car. Overnight to the Grand Canyon. One day to go to lake Mead (did hoover Dam the last time) then up to Valley of Fire SP. It is amazing at sunset! We are going to Death Valley also as we have never been there. Red Rock Canyon is a short trip out of town as is Mt. Charleston. We hope to do both as we have 10 whole days and the Strip stuff we can do in the evening. Have a great time! Maybe we will see you there!
