When we stay at VCI - are there any restaurants, shopping within walking distance 2 miles? What hotels are on either side of this resort. Thank-you for your time

The Palapa restaurant is on site. Next door is Casa Maya, which probably has a restaurant. On the other side, toward town, is a hotel chain (used to be Calinda, now called the Oasis Beach, maybe.) Neither would be my choice for dining.
Close by is The Cove (not to be mistaken with Captain's Cove) and reports vary. A bit further down is Dolcemente, an Italian place on the beach. It is a bit hard to find, as it is on a side street. The side street is called Pez Volador. Last time I was there, in April, the street sign was gone, probably a result of the hurricane. After that, it is a pretty barren stretch until you get to the Caracol Mall area. Before that is a residential area and then the golf course. I like Mocambo, on the ocean side of the street, for their seafood.
Heading into town there are not a lot of choices either. Some places have been there for years but I have never heard of anyone eating there. Many of the hotel are AI, so you can't just walk in.

Bottom line, I think, is hop on a bus!!

Thanks Karen - when booking there I planned on taking the bus or cabs but thought I'd ask to see if there was anything in the area. Thanks for the discription of the area.

We used to be able to walk to several good places from VCI but that is getting hard. Restaurants have moved away from this section since the Riu took over a large nearby property and made it A.I.

Carlos & Charlie's is now at Plaza Forum by the Sea. We had dinner there in March and spoke with a waiter from El Shrimp Bucket who recognized us. At the time it was closed for repairs but he said that there were many rumors about it being moved also so we may be losing another option. At the time all of the staff from El Shrimp Bucket were apparently working at other Groupo Anderson restaurants in town.

A short bus ride in either direction gives you access to a lot of dining options. VCI also has the advantage of being close to many choices in the downtown area.

Geoff and others...there are some restaurants heading toward town, like El Correo Epanol, which is there year after year, but almost always empty. Have you ever been in there? I like VCI for its proximity to downtown and the good and not expensive restaurants there.
We used to always go to La Parrilla but we now frequent El Tacolote, just past Tulum on the right side.
