I already own about 9 weeks but none in the Marriott system. I've got a friend's dad who wants to dump 3 weeks he owns in South Carolina. All he really knows about the weeks is that they aren't prime, that he pays about $1,200 a year in MF (per week) and gets 2,500 points per week. He has offered to sell me as many of the weeks as I want to buy at "half market value." He trusts me to tell him the market value.

What do I need to find out to decide how much these weeks are worth? What's involved in transferring the weeks?

Thanks so much!

You really need to know the resort and the season. If they are gold (later spring and early fall) and you think you may use at least semi regularly you may want to take. Silver weeks have very little value and unless a direct ocean front unit that you would use during that season I would pass. Bronze weeks have no market value. You would not be eligible for points if transferred. Only resales before 2010 are eligible for enrollment without a substantial retail points purchase. If you are looking for a week for Marriott exchange priority (which I would be careful about your expectations) you would want a lock off vs a dedicated non lock off which is what all the SC Marriotts are.

My first thought is your friend will think they are worth more -- if dad paid developer price.

Depending on how you want to use these Weeks there may not be any value in you purchasing them regardless of how much you might pay. Off-season HHI weeks don't have very much value as exchangers within Interval International unless you're talking about exchanging to other low-demand Weeks (which will most likely cost less in MF's annually) or within a few months of check-in (again, which last-minute inventory can be had with less-expensive-MF's Weeks in the Marriott system.) You won't be able to take advantage of the Marriott Destination Club Points system because the owner's enrollment of these Weeks won't transfer to you, and, you won't be able to re-enroll them because they'll be ineligible as external resales after you purchase them.

If he's trying to do you a favor (which is admirable in itself,) this really isn't a favor for the reasons above. If he's genuinely interested in off-loading his Marriott Weeks he should use the contact info at this link - Marriott Resales Operations/Sell Weeks - before exploring the external markets. IF Marriott accepts his Weeks into their program then chances are good that he'll get more for them from Marriott than on the external resale market.

Aside from all that, you might get some idea of the value of these Weeks by browsing this thread and the link to the ROFR database in the first post therein:
ROFR metric / Ongoing ROFR Activity.

Good luck!

Platinum HHI has very high value and Gold still very good. Better than Gold at many locations. Silver and Bronze at HHI has some of the lowest values out there. The true value of Silver and Bronze is a negative number. The demand is so low. The II getaway prices for prime 2BR beach front Bronze weeks is $377 for a platinum account. That is 1/4th the amount of the fees. You can always count on getting one of those dirt cheap bronze weeks once they start selling the getaways. Silver isn't much higher.

You can probably exchange ok with them but that alone is not a reason to purchase.

Thank-you all - this has been incredibly helpful. The owners bought a house in the area and they just want to get rid of the $3,600/yr they pay in MF. They are trying to do me a favor. I've asked them the questions and will see what the answers are. I will probably ask more questions when I hear. Thanks
