I've been searching this website for places to stay on Cape Cod in 2016. Seems like a great alternative in a place where nice timeshares are scarce. Anyone have any experience with this website?

We used them last winter to book a place in Belize for next winter. Odd thing was I found a place on the .ca site but it wasn't listed on their .com site . It was easy to book but a little frustrating in that you must communicate (during & after booking) with the owners through HomeAway as they will black out any private email addresses in your communications. We also took their insurance as it really wasn't that costly.

The owners of the home we were going to rent emailed us a few months later to tell us that they had cancelled our reservation because they sold their house! HomeAway said they were keeping a chunk of our deposit due to the cancellation but later refunded it after DH called them to explain it was the owner not us that cancelled. They also refunded our insurance fees.

I rent with the above sites and they always give my renters my phone and email. My renters have always enjoyed the direct communications as opposed to flipkey which is a real pain. No contract till rent and fee is paid. It works out only after we can talk and they realize they can use homeaway without a fee .I have used them for 6 years without problems. Sorry for your difficulties.

I am using it (Home Away) right now for the second time. No problems whatsoever. Last time we stayed in a lovely cottage directly on the shores of Lake Champlain. The owners were very responsive and helpful. This time, staying in a wonderful condo with outstanding views of the White Mountains. Again- the owner is very helpful and attentive.

The only thing I would have to say about renting a private home as compared to staying/renting at a resort is that it is much more quiet than I even like for a week. No activities going on, etc.

Where we are staying right now is a residential condo complex (a lot of second homeowners). At first, we (and the residents here) couldn't get into the pool gate with the code the owner gave us. Evidently they were having issues with the keypad itself. After I texted the owner about it, she sent me a text that they had to change the code and gave me the new one. Ok- so far so good. However, then discovered the heated pool, which just opened for the season, is filthy in terms of debris and dead bugs and also there is a BIG ant problem- thousands of ants around the entire perimeter of the pool and falling into the pool itself. YUK! Unusable. Too bad, as this was a big selling point for me in picking this condo, along with the view from the balcony and excellent reviews. I sent a text to the owner and she said she will let the HOA know, etc. However, this was a holiday wknd and I assume because of that no one came out to correct the problem. At a resort, you can pretty much get this type of thing rectified quickly in most cases if it even occurs. That is one drawback to a private home vs. a resort. I am hoping it gets taken care of before our vacation is over!

When we stayed at the Lake Champlain cottage, there were thousands of little gnats that just came out for early spring- all over the windows and doors and our car- and also a lot of goose poop on the lawn. At a resort, most times they would be on top of something like this.

That said, I would definitely not hesitate to use Home Away for your Cape Cod excursion. Just keep in mind, it is different than being at a resort.

I've used both VRBO and Homeaway with no problems. We rented a wonderful cabin in West Yellowstone through VRBO and have rented several great homes on Hilton Head ( for our annual family reunion, when we need 7 or 8 bedrooms!)
All have been great....

I've used VRBO for a long term rental (3 months) in Steamboat Springs CO and for several week long rentals in SC. Always as advertised and the one time we had a problem with the elevator in the condo in SC, a call to the owner had it fixed that day.

Cheers

I am also happy to report that the condo owner got the pool cleaned today and I was able to swim! I was the only one in it as the complex is mostly second home or wknd owners and it is off season right now. (They still have to work on the ants, however):whoopie:

Bastroum,

I'm on the Cape (Harwich) right now, but am leaving on Thursday. Will be back on Sunday for most of the week.

If you find a place, I can drive by it for you and take a photo.

I'm sure you'll do fine, but I can take a look-see for you if you'd like.

We're close to Chatham, Brewster, Yarmouth, Orleans, Sandwich, W. Barnstable and of course, Harwich. I don't get down to Falmouth, Mashpee, Hyannis or Centerville/Cotuit that often. Orleans towards P-Town is a rare trip.

I beg to differ, have stayed at what I consider very nice timeshares on Cape Cod. Trade thru RCI and VRI. Have stayed in Mashpee at Cape Holiday and Sea Mist, Cape Winds in Hyannis and Brewster Green in Brewster. Also Briarwood in Falmouth. Have also rented cottages many years ago in Wareham at Swifts Beach privately owned cottages that we stayed in when I was a child. There are lots of places on the Cape to stay, it depends on what you want and how close to the beach you want to be. Good Luck, I hope you find what you are looking for in 2016.

Yes. Also look at weneedavacation.com especially for a cape cod rental.

Thanks for the offer. It's still a little early for Summer of 2016.

I've stayed in Mashpee at Cape Holiday Estates and of course I stay, almost every year, at The Cove at Yarmouth. They are not at the level of the Marriott's and Starwood properties I have stayed in. However, they are nice. We are staying at Brewster Green on June 17, 2016 for a week and then I'd like to rent, using HomeAway, for 2 to 3 weeks afterwards. I really want to go to the beach during the day and Cape Cod League Baseball games at night. BTW...When I was 7 or 8 my parents rented a cottage for the summer at Swifts Beach. Ever since then (1958 or 1959) I have been hooked on Cape Cod. One of my favorite places on earth. No matter how many times I go to Honolulu or Lahaina, I always want to go back home to Cape Cod.
