I've always been some level of elite with UA (last year I was Platinum Elite with UA) but, as I've reported in other threads, I'm traveling much, much less these days.

But did you know, you can attain UA Silver Elite status just by being a Marriott Rewards Platinum Member? I really wish we received a higher elite level than Silver, since Silver is not worth much anyway, but beggars can't be choosers-- or can we?

And hopefully you have taken advantage of the Marriott Rewards status match with Starwood and leveraged that through Starwood's affinity program to upgrade your Delta status as well.

I never thought of doing that. But, since I live in Central NJ--all my flights are out of the United Hub in Newark. I'm stuck with them!

I agree a higher level would be nice, but United Silver does give you free checked bags and the right to upgrade to Economy Plus for free within 24 hours of departure. Both of these are valuable benefits that we use on almost every United domestic flight.

I agree!

But

It's gonna be hard to go down to measly Silver after being Gold, Platinum and 1K. I've always been at least Silver, but until you reach Gold, you don't feel Elite

I hear you and I understand. Fortunately, I am lifetime platinum on American because otherwise I would now have no status with them. I still fly American more than any other airline, but the amount of our airline travel is not what it used to be.

So how do you get Silver status on United?

If you are platinum in marriott rewards program, you qualify for silver elite status on united. Stay 75 nights or more in marriott units or be executive or higher in dc points get you platinum status with marriott.

Thanks to this thread I recently linked my DH's United Mileage account with his Marriott Platinum status. We just took our first United flights 2 weeks ago and he made the upgrade to first class on one of our flights. Not much since it was on a small plane, but it can happen.

It's rare to get upgraded with a silver elite status but I like that I usually get TSA approval with Silver. Also elite check in is nice.

I get 2 free bag with my UA Mileage Presidential Plus Visa so getting one free bag with Silver doesn't work for me. I just like that I got Silver without doing anything.

We've been SPG platinum so when the merger occurred, we got the status match and became Marriott platinum. Then after reading about this UA Silver Elite status, we signed up for it as well and forgot about it since we typically don't fly United. Turns out our next overseas flight happened to be on UA and we got upgraded to first class from Tokyo to Guam both ways. At first we didn't know why we were upgraded, then remembered about the UA silver status.

So I would say since its free, go ahead and take it. You never know.
