Anyone have any experience using the new Luxury SPG AmEx to pay maintenance fees or close a weeks purchase? We are closing on a week at Ocean Pointe that was part of a hybrid purchase. Got the CC Auth form and it says to provide cashier's check or CC Auth form for a "Marriott Credit Card."

I am assuming since we are post-8.18, the Luxury SPG AmEx will qualify as a "Marriott Credit Card," particularly since I am earning 6 MR points per $1 spent on it. I filled it out and sent it in for the transaction. Will advise if there are any issues.

There are several reports in the Vistana forum indicating success!

We have already gotten the credit for Marriott maintenance fees.

Just used it a few weeks ago to pay mvc maintenance fees. Got the $300 credit for Marriott purchase 2 days after posting. And see 6x Marriott points for each dollar of mf rhat was charged.

The SPG Amex already counted for Marriott points for maintenance fees prior to 8.18. It has been this was ever since the acquisition. Either card could be used to generate the points.

Love the new Luxury card. $300 credit for Marriott spend, Free 50,000 point night, free TSA precheck, and free Priority Pass.

If you fly alot and like to use lounges the Priority Pass is extremely valuable. You get yourself and two guests in free unlimited. They don't even sell a pass like that. The closest thing is Prestige where you get in free unlimited but still have to pay $32 for guests. That membership is $429 a year.

The $450 annual fee is expensive but the benefits are well over $1,000.

Do you really get 6X for Vistana and Marriott timeshare maintenance fees? I have been using Chase Sapphire Reserve to pay fees, but I will have to assess if that is the best deal. Hard to figure the value, when my CSR gets 3X and then is multiplied through the portal to 1.5X.

Not sure about Vistana but yes for Marriott. It used to be 2x SPG but then converted it was 6. I paid my massive bill this past year and the amount of points generated alleviated some of the pain. All those points became miles at 1:1. With the conversion it is now 6 right off the bat.

When I determine the value, I just look at a $10K spend = 30,000 points X 1.5 = $450 in travel. How would that equate to 6X in Vistana fees. I don't know that it would be worth 6X.

Yes, you receive 6x points for payment of Vistana MFs. That is what I received.

The points guy has not devalued Marriott Rewards points yet, if he will. Using his .9 cents each, $10,000 spend x 6 = 60,000 points x .9 each = $540. Not much different.

To build on that, using the same source, I believe he values URs at $.02. So, $600 vs. $540. Still not much different but possibly of interest. As always Ymmv. Cheers.

Really interesting. I didn't think the $300 would be applied to cash stays or maintenance fees. If I did I would have definitely got the card. I thought it would only be applied to market place, restaurant, and other purchases during a stay.

The card only knows whether it is a Marriott purchase or not, so anything tagged as Marriott qualified receives the higher points rebate and counts towards the $300 credit.

Good to know. That's just not how it appeared to me when it was advertised. And now the window for me to get the 100,000 point is gone because I upgraded my premiere card a couple months ago.

Not sure why you would think that unless you took the info in the T&C indicating market place, restaurant, and other purchases must be charged to your room as indicating those were the only type of purchases allowed.

I also received the $300 credit from a combination of a deposit at a Sheraton and payment of Vistana MFs.

I just noticed that I paid eight lock-off fees on 9/14 and I was credited the $300 on 9/17. When I upgraded the card I was thinking it was a rebate further down the road. I had no idea it was that fast. I haven't even been charged the annual fee yet.

When you upgrade the card, your current card is treated as the new upgraded one immediately. I upgraded on 9/5 and my new annual fee will not be charged until sometime in late October. I also haven't paid the new annual fee but have already received my $300 rebate and also had 100,000 points posted to my Marriott account for meeting the $5,000 spend. Nice!!

I wish I didn't jump on the new Marriott Card because now I'm lock out from this card for 24 months and I do think is a tad better, at least for me. Even though I did get the 100k points, this is a better deal because of the $300 and the 3% for restaurant, which I don't believe the Marriott card offers.

Got the new chase Marriott premiere plus and 5 minutes later applied for the amex luxury card. Got 350k bonus for wifey and I applying for both these cards. Would have applied for chase business Marriott card too, but wife and I would run afoul of chases 5/24 rule. Now we also have to wait 2 years before signing up for the business card to be eligible for bonus.

We were able to get both bonuses before the new rule went into effect on 8/26. Wish I had know about new rules earlier. I wouldn't have applied for hilton aspire card and could have gotten the chase business Marriott card instead. Would have gotten bonus for 3 cards, instead of having to wait 24 months for last bonus now. You will just have to wait it out like me for that 100k bonus.

Just got notice that the card was charged for the closing fees on the Ocean Pointe week. As I read this thread:
  • This will meet my $5k requirement to get my 100k points
  • This will count for 6 MRPs per $ so should yield another ~90k points
  • I will get a $300 statement credit based on this being a "Marriott transaction" (I'm sure restaurants and other items during the year would have eaten this up, but it's nice to get it all at once and not have to keep track of it as the year goes on).
I will have to look at the Priority Pass thing. I have membership in that via my Business Platinum AmEx (same $450 annual fee) but I don't recall whether it is 2 guests free per visit. Sounds pretty sweet when you can use it.

I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago on this very subject looking at this card and ended up comparing the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) to the SPG Luxury card. We had been using the old Chase Marriott that gets you 5x points per $1 for Marriott's but also a nights credit for each $3K in spending. Perks are similar but the differences ended up being the SPG travel rebate is only good for Marriott properties vs CSR good for any travel, Chase Ultimate Reward points vs Marriott points, SPG get a fee authorized user while CSR is $75 per. SPG gets the free night per year at a 50K level. The CSR provides primary rental car protection. The offer was 125K points for SPG vs 50K for CSR but when you convert value, that's almost the same. SPG gets 2x for non dining/non travel and CSR gets 1 pt per in that situation. Both provide a host of options and protections that are similar (travel credit, Lounge pass, Global Entry/TSA credit, etc) and both provide the same Lounge access though with CSR any additional cards get their own membership which is the only additional benefit for the fee that I can see. And I very much appreciated this fine group helping me walk through that issue.

How did you get the 125k offer? I had that offer in an email but when i clicked button, it took me to amex website that said i could get only 100k. I wish i had time to get card and then referr my wife for the 20k bonus. But it was on 8/25 and didnt want to get locked out of the chase marriott rewards plus 75k bonus.

We had the same thing, here's how it went. I got the offer then when I went to check further it gave me the 100K offer using either our old SPG or Marriott numbers. But apparently they gave us new SPG number during the go live then rolled them back into our current Marriott rewards number. I had previously linked them and had started the process to combine them at this point and I don't know if we'd combined them a few days earlier whether we would have gotten a new number of not. Did you get an email for a new SPG number on or around 8/27?

I've been assured I'll get the points we signed up for even though AMEX has this linked to the Marriott number. When I called Marriott rewards, they could see all 3 numbers even though my online account just shows the 2. Ultimately we decided to do both the SPG Luxury and the CSR since they will both be free and we were unsure of how this was going to go. I plan to cancel my Delta AMEX before renewal. I have kept the old chase Marriott, ? free since it includes the single night (25K max). We'll see how it goes, take the bonus bribes and re-evaluate near the end of the year. The CSR was too appealing due to the primary coverage on rental cars but the SPG at 6X rewards on our quite sizable MF bill was as well. Ultimately it'll come down to how well the chase points work for me, I likely won't keep both long term.

I did not get a letter for a new spg number. After calling and asking CS at amex about this 125k offer, I just gave up and took the 100k. The other 25k was worth about $100 but after about 30 minutes and getting no where, I said this was not worth my aggravation.

We got an email about the offer which referenced a new number but it didn't give the entire number and it wasn't one of the 2 numbers I had. I got an email with the new number on it a couple of days later. Then I got a new mailing 2 days ago also with the new number. Both offers expire 12/7. One thing to note is that only my wife got the email and the mailing. At the time she had the old Marriott card and I had no Marriott Credit cards. We had gotten her Marriott rewards card a year ago and changed our MVC account to her number for status since I was Platinum lifetime. I personally have not gotten an email or mailing. Maybe it's aimed at those with the old card only though I had the old card until about 11 months ago.
