I don't want to hijack the Dyson thread since that brand is more than I can afford right now, so I'm starting a new one. My 30-year-old Hoover upright vacuum died last week, and I know the new ones won't last nearly that long. My requirements:
  • upright
  • maximum of $200, preferably under $150
  • prefer bagged instead of bagless, although these have become rarer (surprise to me since I haven't shopped for a vacuum in decades!)
I've checked Consumer Reports and read dozens of reviews. Unfortunately, the highest recommended vacuums are too expensive. Has anyone bought a lower-priced upright in the last few years that you like? I think the Bissell bagged may be my best option, even with a fair amount of negative reviews.

What drove me to spend $750 on a pair of Oreck vacuums in 2007 was I think 2 or 3 Bissels that were ~$150-$200 that each lasted an average of 1.5 years. I got tired of dealing with it. Personally, I'd suggest looking for a used Kirby if you can find one cheap enough from a repair shop. Otherwise, if you can get a Shark and warranty for cheap enough and expect it to be disposable (but I think the warranties are better than the Bissel ones).

We have two Sharks, one for upstairs, one for downstairs, and the Oreck stays in the basement now, but I think the Oreck should be on the second floor.

Shark. I had an Oreck. Good, but $$$. I think the $150 shark works just as well. I actually like emptying the canister-it’s easy. Plus, I don’t want all that stuff sitting in a bag for a month+. The shark has great suction and the pet hair upholstery attachment works well. I had a Hoover-Shark much better.
